The objective of this programme is to support the writing of an article by doctoral-qualified practitioners and to send it to a ranked journal before the completion of the programme. At the end of the programme, participants obtain an Advanced Research Certificate awarded by IAE Bordeaux School of Management, Business Science Institute and the FNEGE.

For successful applicants, the start date is the first week of January 2021. The programme will be run by professors Michel Kalika and Jean-Fabrice Lebraty.

ONLINE INTERNATIONAL WEEK SATISFACTION SURVEY

Read the results of the satisfaction survey, carried out with the help of SPHINX software by Professor Jean Moscarola on the participants of the Business Science Institute 6th International Week, which took place entirely online due to the current health crisis.

106 respondents (Professors, doctors, DBA students and members of the management team) took part in this survey.

This compares with the results of the satisfaction survey conducted in 2019, which showed a satisfaction rate of 9/10.

The verbatims of the 2020 satisfaction survey clearly show that although technically everything went well overall during this week, the relational dimension was missing:

"Certificate and thesis Vivas should be public, as well as the graduation ceremonies".

"I take my hat off once again to the whole BSI team for the excellent organisation. It was amazing! A stroke of genius".

"The seminar was well organised, but the meeting between PhD students and professors was not very animated".

"The organisation and the proceedings were excellent. One regret all the same: even if it's very (and more) comfortable for a professor to participate by video-conference, I'm convinced of the importance of having a face-to-face meeting at least once a year for as many members as possible of the BSI community... in Luxembourg, or even in Lyon... ".

"Congratulations for this flawless organisation!".

"The technical problems were mainly due to teachers and students, and were not the fault of BSI. Bravo!".

"A 'social room' permanently open to everyone could have been a good idea. The idea of the "Meet & Lunch" was a bit complicated for me... between everything, you had to eat (and I didn't feel like eating in front of my camera) and talk to the students.

"Clearly, the doctor/doctoral student meeting was very, very much appreciated. Why not make this into a monthly remote event?".

"Even at a distance, Michel Kalika succeeded in creating a friendly and convivial atmosphere. It was a pleasure to see my colleagues again during this week. And also, thanks to the team, I was able to chat with them over the Internet".

"The presence of the members of the team at each presentation was very reassuring and allowed us to proceed 'as if' we were in Wiltz".

"Bravo for your organisation before and during the week!"

"Virtual meetings (conferences, thesis Vivas, etc.) are not ideal, and are not as good as when face-to-face, but given the situation, this was the right solution. This seminar was very well organised thanks to the technical preparation and to the continuous support and expertise of the team members".

"Although the international week was a real success this year, I didn't give it 10/10 because I still prefer a face-to-face international week ;-)".

"It was the lesser evil. Bravo for having been able to adapt in this way. But above all, let's not forget the power of physical encounters and the unique charm of Wiltz and its castle".

INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH

Interview with Professor Emmanuel Kamdem, Faculty Felloww at Business Science Institute.

Aline: Hello Professor Kamdem, could you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
Emmanuel KamdemI am a full university professor. My academic training path in Europe was influenced by several disciplinary fields involving psychology, sociology, anthropology and management. My experiences in Africa and outside Africa have been conducted mainly in three areas: teaching, research and scientific output; the creation and/or leadership of management training institutions in Cameroon; and the strengthening of managerial skills of African executives and leaders during advanced seminars.

Aline: What were your reasons for joining Business Science Institute?
Emmanuel Kamdem:  joined Business Science Institute in 2016 at the request of Professor Michel Kalika. I accepted his proposal for two main reasons. Firstly, the originality of the academic project he has developed and implemented for the involvement of practicing managers in the creation of knowledge. Secondly, the strong demand from African practising managers to embark on this path in order to give new impetus to their professional careers.

Aline: How is the DBA perceived on the African continent? And how do you see the future of higher education?
Emmanuel Kamdemhe DBA, and primarily the one offered by Business Science Institute, is increasingly successful in Africa. This is justified by the current situation which indicates that about one third of the doctoral students in this programme are either African entrepreneur managers or entrepreneur managers whose research work deals with African management issues. This observation is not really surprising, insofar as Africa has been engaged since the 2000s in a dynamic of economic emergence. This is reflected in economic growth rates that are among the best in the world. Consequently, the future of higher education in Africa needs to be rebuilt by a stronger involvement of practitioners in the production of knowledge; as well as by a greater involvement of private entrepreneurs in the quantitative and qualitative improvement of training provision in higher education. It has been clearly established for several years that the state alone cannot meet the exponential demand for higher education in Africa.

Aline: Africa" is often referred to as if it were a single country, even though the continent is made up of a patchwork of countries. What are the specificities of Cameroon compared to other African countries?
Emmanuel KamdemThe specificities of Cameroon in Africa can be understood at different levels. First of all, Cameroon is generally presented through the very telling metaphor of "Africa in miniature". Historically, Cameroon has had three colonial experiences (German, English and French) which are still visible today in terms of individual and social behaviour. On the linguistic level, this historical context has enabled the emergence of linguistic pluralism with two official languages (French and English), in addition to the national community languages. On the religious level, the country is also marked by a religious syncretism mainly built around Christianity, Islam and the new religious communities stemming from the two main religions mentioned. On the ethnic level, diversity is also present, with about a hundred or so ethnic communities listed. Geographically and environmentally, from the south to the north of the country, the traveller crosses a green forest area, a semi-green savannah area and a Sahelian area that is more akin to the desert.

Aline: What impact will the current health crisis (if it really ends) have on the future of Cameroon?
Emmanuel KamdemJust like everywhere else in the world, the Covid-19 health crisis has already had a detrimental impact on business activity and economic growth. Thus, during the second week of October, the leaders of the country's main employers' organisation, the Groupement Inter-Patronal du Cameroun (GICAM) were met by the Prime Minister, Head of Government. They presented him with the "White Paper" they had prepared to review the difficulties of Cameroonian companies confronted with the pandemic. It is therefore almost certain that this crisis is already having a negative impact on the economic future of Cameroon and for how much longer? This is the worrying question, given what we have been observing for the past few weeks in Europe; with the sudden arrival of the second wave. However, the economic, entrepreneurial and managerial resilience of the generators of wealth in Cameroon is proven. They have shown this very well by very quickly strengthening their capacity to adopt remote working, which was practically unheard of before the start of the pandemic.

AlineWhat research topics would you like to see explored by African DBA participants?
Emmanuel KamdemThese topics are numerous and diverse and I will limit myself here to a few that are likely to allow for research grounded in African contexts and in the field of human resource management, which is my field of teaching and research: the adoption of remote working; the management of senior staff in situations of professional de-skilling; the management of diversity as a factor of organisational performance; the impact of the perception and use of time on individual and organisational performance; the challenge of the emergence of female leadership in a highly male-dominated managerial context; the reconciliation of family and professional life; the impact of religious beliefs and practices on management.

Aline: f you could go back in time, with hindsight which topic would you have chosen for your doctoral thesis?
Emmanuel KamdemJI would probably have chosen the topic on the management of diversity as a factor of organisational performance. Such a topic has the advantage of providing an up-to-date and contextualised grounding, given the many managerial and organisational conflicts observed in almost all African countries.

Professor Emmanuel Kamdem co-published, with Françoise Chevalier and Marielle Audrey Payaud, Grounded Management Research. New Contexts and New Perspectives in Africa, published in the Business Science Institute collection at ems editions in 2020.

ESG in Private Equity and other alternative asset classes: What the industry has accomplished so far regarding Environmental, Social and Governance matters.
Thesis supervised by Professor André Reuter.

AlineHello Doctors, could you briefly introduce yourselves to our readers?

Guy Laurent Fondjo: My name is Guy Laurent Fondjo and I have been working in the financial sector for 20 years now. I have been successively Information Systems Director, Human Resources Director and Regional Director within the pan-African banking group Afriland First Bank. Currently I am Managing Director of Afriland First Bank Guinea and President of the Professional Association of Credit Institutions of Guinea. In addition, I am an economic adviser to the Government and the Presidency of the Republic of Guinea, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of several public and private companies.

Jens HoellermannMy name is Jens Hoellermann, I have more than 12 years of experience in alternative asset management, including fund administration and fund management, and as a lawyer in the field of mergers and acquisitions. I have worked, among others, for one of the world's largest service providers in the administration services department and for two major private equity firms, overseeing different types of investment strategies in Europe and the US, and as a portfolio manager for private equity strategies. I am now owner and managing partner of Intabulis, which provides independent non-executive directors to private equity, venture capital, real estate, debt and infrastructure investment organisations.

AlineYou have been awarded the Business Science Institute's 2020 DBA Prize for Managerial Impact for your thesis. What does this award mean to you?
Guy Laurent Fondjo: This prize, which I am very humbled to receive, represents the recognition of a phase of learning in research undertaken in keeping with the letter and spirit of a DBA, namely: to produce quality research output that respects scientific rigour, while at the same time providing practical solutions to our managerial and even societal difficulties. Above all, it is also a great challenge and a motivation to continue in the ongoing search for solutions to the problems we encounter in our organisations, by adopting the appropriate distance and hindsight, linked to our posture as researchers.

Jens HoellermannI see this award as a recognition of the key role that private equity can play in contributing to social change and of the importance of both the industry as such and the ESG. It is also the reward for three years of hard work and an honour for me, which would not have been possible without the tremendous support of my family, my colleagues and especially my supervisor Professor André Reuter for his thoughts, comments and valuable insights. Finally, it is an incentive and an obligation to ensure that ESG remains high on the agenda of private equity and of my clients in particular.

AlineWhat has been the impact of your research?

Guy Laurent Fondjo: Our research project has led to the design and implementation of a form of organisation of participative and self-centred microfinance structures in the beneficiary communities, with a strong impact on poverty reduction in these communities. The MUFFA-MC2 model in question uses the community to create in a deliberate and iterative way a process of strengthening the intrinsic capacities of communities to enable them to reduce the monetary, subjective and multidimensional poverty they face on a daily basis. By way of illustration of the impact, we note that in the Republic of Guinea, the implementation of the MUFFA-MC2 model has made it possible, in five years, to substantially improve the living conditions of more than one million people through the hundred or so MUFFA and MC2s created throughout the country. Our project also opens up several fields of research for the future.

Jens HoellermannTo date, 117 companies have been studied, representing 76.2% of total global alternative assets. My thesis showed that alternative managers in Australia and Europe are doing better than those in China and North America, while Canadian firms are paying more attention than those in the US. In summary, it was found that more and more alternative fund managers are implementing these sustainable practices and further improving their approaches, and it has been shown that this is likely to increase in the future.

AlineIn what way has Business Science Institute contributed to your career advancement?

Guy Laurent Fondjo: In many ways.  The diversity, reputation and experience of Business Science Institute's faculty have created fertile ground for imagination and scientific output, particularly through the many interactions with the professors. The responsiveness, availability and diligence of the Business Science Institute's support teams have helped to facilitate our induction and learning process in the field of research, which was totally new to us; the regular monitoring, the high standards and rigour of my thesis supervisor enabled me to do more and more each time and to stay the course in the search for excellence and work well done; finally, the exchanges with fellow PhD students and other PhD graduates from Business Science Institute enabled us to advance more smoothly, as there were moments of discouragement along the way.

Jens Hoellermann: As I own and manage my own business and as doctoral qualifications are not widely recognised in the alternative fund industry, particularly in the UK and the US where most of my clients are based, the personal impact is limited. However, my clients appreciate the fact that I have researched the alternative asset industry and recognise my expertise in an area that is becoming increasingly important to them. My thesis provided me with a unique opportunity to delve deeper into a subject from my previous studies. I am very grateful to Business Science Institute for the excellent support I received and for the knowledge I gained through discussions and seminars, both with other doctoral students and with professors.
