Devotion for Tuesday, November 10th

by Nancy C.
Dear WPPC Friends,

When I first started visiting Wrightsville Beach almost 20 years ago, there was always a lot of talk about “walking the loop”. I wasn’t the healthiest person back then so I had no immediate interest in learning the history and lure of the infamous “Loop”. I was, however, fortunate enough to spend a lot of time at a close friend’s condo where we could sit on her porch and watch the never ending stream of walkers, runners and strollers filled with both dogs and children cross the bridge in and out of “downtown” Wrightsville Beach at all hours of the day and night. I enjoyed the scenery and constant activity but did not really become enamored until years later when I was building my home here. At this point in time I was more health and exercise conscience and began to explore the allure of “The Loop”.

According to Star News OnLine in articles posted by Si Cantrell, Dec. 2, 2008, and by Amy Hotz Jan. 28, 2009, the 2.45 mile circle of sidewalk was the vision of John T. Nesbitt, the Town of Wrightsville Beach Public Works Director from 1979-1999.  Mr. Nesbitt passed away in August, 2006 and the Loop was dedicated in his honor the following December.

One Monday early this summer I was walking the loop and it truly hit me how blessed we are to be in this world, even in 2020, and how we should strive to slow down and live in the moment, enjoy God’s magnificent creation and give thanks for the local beauty and history we are fortunate enough to enjoy here. On this particular day I stopped to read the dedication stone to John Nesbitt and tried to reflect on how much he had contributed to the town over his career, how much his family loved him and how lucky I was to be enjoying his legacy!
Then I walked by the entrance to Wrightsville Beach Park. I marveled at how beautiful the flowers were and how lucky we are to have access to this facility with nature trails, tennis courts, playgrounds and fields for games. I took a moment to give thanks again.

Then I passed a huge red, white and blue banner that read “God Bless America”. It made me smile and I gave thanks for the privilege of living in this great country and for our military and veterans who protect the freedoms we enjoy everyday.

Next on my journey, I passed a water fountain, closed to humans due to Covid-19 but open to puppies.  What a blessing and thoughtful consideration for our four legged companions!

Further along the loop I crossed one of the bridges and just stopped to enjoy the scenery, watch the boats, kayaks, paddle boards and the sun reflecting on the water. I gave thanks again.

Then I entered “downtown” and passed Roberts Grocery store. What a landmark and beloved tradition for our area from warm, fresh cinnamon buns to their almost world famous chicken salad.  Seriously thankful for that!

Another awesome moment in my walk was the “Little Free Library”. I think these popped up in our area during the Florence recovery but how cool to grab a book or leave a book and take a break from our “on-line” lives?? Then I passed the Greensboro Street park for children - beautifully appointed and open to the public. I gave thanks again.

I could go on and on about how magnificent this walk is when we take a moment to enjoy all of the special sights, sounds and amenities, such as the Wrightsville Beach History Museum, which is a complete treat! Again, I was reminded how lucky we are and I gave thanks.
Then I began my walk back to the car under the amazing majestic live oaks that line a good part of “the loop”. I was feeling very connected to God, very blessed, very humble, very at peace with the world and then it was Monday and I came upon our fabulous Farmer’s Market!!
Thanks be to God for the many, many blessings of “the loop”!

Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.  Proverbs 3:6 NLT

Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. Colossians 3:2 NLT

So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. Romans 10:17 NLT

Let us always stop and appreciate this magnificent place that God has made for us!

"We Gather Together to Ask the Lord's Blessing"

You don't have to be a member of our Chancel Choir to participate!  Just record yourself singing!  All are welcome!

How to participate:

1.  Watch and listen to this video of Sharon singing (with Ruth and Susan):

Base Track : "We Gather Together"
2.   Download the music:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zVjEy2SPgD8_29VLTqoSHISzo2zgUE6K/view?usp=sharing

3.  Make a recording of you singing this song in sync with Sharon

Sing any part!

To record in sync with Sharon you will need two devices:
  1. One phone, tablet, or computer to listen to the song video as you play along
  2. and a second camera/phone/tablet to record the video of you singing.
(PLEASE wear headphones while recording.  This makes it much more likely that  you will be in sync and makes the editing process easier.)

4.  Then share the file with Emile by Google Drive, Drop Box or another file-sharing service.  (The video will be too large to text or e-mail.  If you need help, please ask!)

The deadline to send me a video will be Wednesday, November 18th at 5pm.   After that I will begin editing the video together - and it is really difficult add a late video after I've begun work.

5.  Call or text Emile to make sure I got the video.  (Sometimes file transfers don't work the first time - especially if you've not sent a file to me before.  I REALLY don't want to accidentally leave out someone who recorded a song!)

If you need help with any part of this process, please contact me - I would love for you to be involved!

Thank you all!  The more voices the better!
