One of the things on all our minds lately is the rise in COVID cases both locally and nationally. Things are definitely not going in the right direction. However, hospitalizations remain fairly constant in SLO County and we are not seeing overwhelming numbers, which is very good news. I remind us that outdoor church services are not being identified as the source of outbreaks. I anticipate that outdoor worship will still be allowed, even if we find ourselves back in tier 1 in coming weeks.

The news is disappointing, however, it does not cause Marc and me to change anything we are already doing: masking indoors, avoiding indoor crowds, spacing at least 6 feet from others when unmasked & outside, and washing our hands (or using sanitizer when soap is unavailable) after we do things like pump gas. I’ve also been carrying a stash of empty bread wrappers to use to cover my hand when I open doors. These simple measures are still believed to be extremely effective in disease prevention.

As for the coming holidays, our family has decided to modify our Thanksgiving celebration to be held outside, with no more than 8 people, and everyone appropriately spaced. Every family unit will have their own set of serving utensils. Bad weather will cancel. If this happens, we will be disappointed but the earth will continue spinning on its axis and God will still love us. We will still love each other. We may decide that while a cool windy day will prevent sharing a meal outside, we can still meet up at Port San Luis and walk the beach.

So dear friends, take a deep breath and carry on. Remember that this virus isn’t skulking around the corners of your house, ready to pounce the minute you step outside.

God’s peace and joy be with us,
Patti
We'd love to see you at the Drive-thru, but if you can't make it on November 14 you may drop off your donation at the church Monday through Thursday between 8am and noon. The shopping cart will be in the foyer next to Quist Hall.

Many families are multi-generational with several members in one household. Bags of rice and beans from 1lb to 25lbs are acceptable. The same goes for the flour, sugar and oil. All sizes are acceptable and will be put to good use. Maseca is a special corn flour used to make tortillas and is a basic staple in all of the households. Storage space is limited at Iglesia Santa Cruz, so Visa gift cards for $25 are also helpful.

We have the names and wish lists of 40 children at Iglesia Santa Cruz. Because of Covid we've changed how we connect you with the children.

WORD
First Reading: Zephaniah 1:7, 12-18
Zephaniah (like the prophet Amos in last week’s first reading) presents the day of the Lord as one of judgment and wrath. Descriptions of the last day in the New Testament include details taken from Old Testament accounts of the day of the Lord.

Psalm 90

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Though we do not know and cannot calculate the day of Christ’s return, we live faithfully in the here and now as we anticipate the day when we will be given eternal salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Alleluia Verse
Holy Gospel: Matthew 25:14-30

Sermon - Pastor Richard Rollefson
Hymn of the Day - Oh, Happy Day When We Shall Stand  - ELW 441

Affirmation of Faith (Apostle's Creed)
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
                        creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Sprit,
                        born of the virgin Mary,
                        suffered under Pontius Pilate,
                        was crucified, died and was buried;
                        he descended to the dead.
                        On the third day he rose again;
                        he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
                        the holy catholic church,
                        the communion of saints,
                        the forgiveness of sins,
                        the resurrection of the body,
                        and the life everlasting. Amen.

Adult Forum
Sunday, following worship

November 8-22, 2020

Join us for part two of this three-week series on the Gospel of Mark, the featured gospel for worship services next year.

Advent begins a new year in the liturgical church calendar with our primary gospel readings coming from the Gospel according to Mark. In November, we’ll prepare for the new church year by exploring what is generally understood to be the first account of the story of Jesus.
Outdoor In-Person Worship Service
Sundays at 12 Noon

In case of rain, the outdoor service will be canceled. Those who RSVP will be notified by phone and email

Sign-up here to RSVP

We are holding in person worship and communion while observing guidelines and best practices to maximize the safety of those attending. We will continue with the existing Sunday morning schedule of Zoom worship at 9:30am followed by the Adult Forum at 10:45.

The in person service will be outdoors, under the shade canopy in front of the santuary. Please click the RSVP link above to help us prepare the space for socially distanced clusters of same household members. You are asked to bring your own chair (if possible); metal church chairs will also be available. Attendees should be masked when arriving, will receive a temperature check and be signed in. The worship itself will be an abbreviated communion service (under 45 minutes in length). Communion will be done using prepackaged communion bread and cup kits. Entrance and departure routes will be marked and attendees are requested to mask following the service. There will not be a coffee time following worship. While we are aware that we are holding this in-person worship at a time when the weather is turning cooler and we hope for needed rain, we hope that this will be an alternative worship for those wanting to meet in person.

Advent Small Group Series
Four Saturdays In & After Advent:
December 5, 12, 19, and 26
6:30 PM on Zoom

During the Advent season we often talk a lot about the Holy Land of the past without talking much about the Holy Land of the present. What is going on in Bethlehem today? How are we called to accompany our Palestinian siblings in love, joy, hope, peace, and justice? What does this mean for our own advent journey?

ELCA Young Adults and ELCA Peace Not Walls are presenting a 4-week Advent Pilgrimage in Palestine. Young adults from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land will lead us on this pilgrimage through story, education, and theological reflection. There is a free opening educational webinar run by ELCA Young Adults on Monday, November 30 5:30-6:30pm PST (
you can register here), and on each following Saturday we will meet on Zoom as a Mt. Carmel small group utilizing the pilgrimage’s weekly resources.

Contact Monica at
monicajholman@gmail.com to learn more or to RSVP for the small group.
