The Dark Moon & The New Moon

Here in Bali, most Balinese celebrate Tilem or The Dark Moon, while in the West, most cultures recognize The New Moon. In Indonesia, both the Dark and New moon are recognized, where several ceremonies are held as the moon turns dark before welcoming the new moon. As you may already know, Bali is one of our planet's highly spiritual cultures, making each day, life offerings, rituals and ceremonies. Especially during the phases of the Moon, each village recognizes the lunar phases in their own unique ceremonies.

Balinese believe that the Dark Moon and Full Moon are the heart and mind of a person. Balinese believe the Moon is the symbol of the divinity of the mind. Therefore, for people with bright or pure minds, their resultant behaviour is like the Full Moon. And when the mind becomes impure, as people's behaviour is dark and ominous, just like the Dark Moon. The Dark Moon occurs every 15 days. It is a time when Balinese seek God's protection, with deep devotion, for they attempt to keep away negative energy and wild desires. The Dark Moon is a good day for people to practice their spirituality as it is the night of Lord Shiva.

Tilem Sasih Jiyestha is the ceremony for Balinese to celebrate the Darkness before the New Moon. Every woman in the village prepares a special offering for the temple in their family compound. Most temples in each village hold blessing ceremonies with the local priest for the villagers, who bring their offerings to the temple.

On The New Moon day, Balinese pray to Surya the Sun God to ask him to brighten their negative thoughts. It is a reminder that life has its ups and downs and that moments of darkness are followed by the light, It also stands symbolically for our dark sides, negative thoughts. Many Balinese also celebrate Melukat, referring to Purification, as symbolic for cleansing from any negativity and darkness of the mind.
