Research project ideas for students Research Master program Human Movement Sciences
AMS research members are invited to present research projects that RMA students can us for their second year projects.
The Research Master's program is a two-year full-time program, integrating fundamental scientific research with relevant questions from clinical and sports practice. The program has close ties with the Amsterdam Movement Sciences institute. The vast majority of courses are taught by AMS lecturers/researchers. All tenured professors affiliated with AMS and in the position of a University Teaching Qualification (BKO) can act as examiner (primary supervisor). In the whole second year (60 EC), students conduct a research project of their own choice. Students should get hands-on experience across the full empirical scientific research cycle (from defining a research question to designing a study, collecting and analyzing data and reporting results). There are various ways in which students can find a research project: contact a potential supervisor, own project idea, via posted research project opportunities on Canvas. To inform students about your research and advertise a project, there is also the option to give a presentation at one of the RM seminars held every 6 weeks. If you have a project for our RM students and/or want to give a presentation, please contact the program director Huub Maas by sending an email.

Looking for PhD candidates up for a challenge
Are you up for an interesting and fun learning experience? We are looking for two PhD candidates to sit on the jury for the AMS Best Poster Award 2021.The abstracts will be submitted in January and are judged by the committee members, who pick the winner. During the previous years, there have been approximately 45 abstracts to judge. As part of the jury, which consists of both senior and junior AMS researchers, you will judge the submitted abstracts prior to the meeting and pick a winner of the selected abstracts that are presented during the AM. The submitted abstracts are from all fields of research within AMS, e.g., movement sciences, wounds, DNA, movement therapy and sports, so this will definitely broaden your mind and introduce you to a broad range of science! You can use the activity as part of your PhD training and learn how to judge scientific output! If this has your name on it, get in touch before December 5, 2020, via mail to ams@vu.nl

Award Amsterdam UMC Young Talent Fund for Eline Flux

Eline Flux has been awarded the Amsterdam UMC Young Talent Fund. Her research focuses on developing methods to measure and decrease stretch hyperreflexia (i.e. spasticity) in patients with neurological conditions, especially children with cerebral palsy and adults with spinal cord injury. She has developed a custom-made virtual gaming environment to provide feedback on hyperreflexia with her research group at the department of rehabilitation medicine. Eline currently assesses its applicability within one session of training and first results are very promising. Therefore, a follow up study will include long-term training, aiming eventually at effecting motor performance in CP  during walking. Eline will spend the award to visit the Medical University of South Carolina, where another research group is also working on such long-term training.

FGB Team wins Cybathlon Global Edition 2020

The Dutch Dream Team has won the cybathlon Global Edition! VU_FGB Pulse Racing athlete Sander Koomen set a time of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over a distance of 1200 meters in the FES category. The FES race is the category for athletes with spinal cord injury. Because of the spinal cord injury they are no longer able to cycle independently. Functional electrical stimulation makes it possible for them to perform a pedal movement on a recumbent. The VU student team PULSE Racing was founded to further develop FES technology for people with spinal cord injury and to guide the athletes.

Tyler Kirby

My name is Tyler Kirby and I recently joined the Department of Physiology at Amsterdam UMC. I received my PhD in Physiology from the University of Kentucky in fall 2015 under the guidance of John McCarthy and Charlotte Peterson. During my PhD, I studied how muscle stem cells regulate both muscle fiber and extracellular matrix adaptation during periods of mechanical load, and how these processes are altered during the normal aging process. My interests in mechanotransduction and tissue engineering brought me to Cornell University, where I pursued my postdoctoral work in Dr. Jan Lammerding’s laboratory within the Weill Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology. At Cornell, I studied a rare group of muscular dystrophies, termed laminopathies, and found that the disease-causing mutations render skeletal muscle nuclei extremely susceptible to mechanical stress. My group at Amsterdam UMC will focus on understanding the fundamental mechanisms regulating mechanotransduction in skeletal muscle, specifically how mechanical forces are “sensed” by myonuclei, and how defects in this critical physiological process may contribute to age- and disease-related muscle dysfunction.
