In new release Light, Console Me, renowned British singer-songwriter Ana Silvera takes inspiration from the Mourner’s Kaddish – the Aramaic prayer recited in memory of those who have passed – to create a work that speaks of the profound losses in our current times. The three track 'mini-EP' is available on Bandcamp and all major streaming platforms from today, 25 November, via AWAL.

"For ages I’d wanted to write a piece about the ways we mourn, the ways we remember the dead",  Ana writes. "I've long been fascinated by the story of elephants who revisit the resting place of the matriarch, taking turns to touch and stroke the bones, forming their own kind of wake. And in the human world, in my own life, I think of the rabbi who cut the silk scarf I wore around my neck at my mother’s burial over a decade ago, a ritual gesture that deftly acknowledged the rage and grief that comes with loss".
Commissioned as a Covid-19 legacy work, Light, Console Me, which also features Gambian kora player Sefo Kanuteh, was created as part of Arts La’Olam’s #betweenspaces global music and arts programme.

Ana’s sensuous and haunting vocals coupled with a unique lyrical delicacy makes her the perfect custodian of an important project that gives a voice to the bereaved and a space to grieve.

Light, Console Me is made up of three thematically linked songs, each a poignant vignette. In Ana's words:
"The first song arose from an image of a hospital room giving way to a vast sky. I was seeing through the eyes of the patient, longing to give up the fight but held back by the memory of the ones they'd leave behind. For the second song, I found myself in the shoes of that loved one, pacing up and down the hallway waiting for news. And for the final song (which is based on a folk song from Sefo's tradition), I was one among a congregation, finding comfort in the collective experience".
