Wednesday is Veterans Day, the day we pause to honor every single service member who has put on a uniform and served our nation. These courageous people have always been there for us when our country needed brave men and women to serve. When our freedoms or democracy were under threat throughout history, our veterans stepped up to ensure our republic would thrive. These Americans could not operate alone. That is why I'd also like to extend my deepest gratitude to these patriots' families; the love and support you offer makes all of us better.
I want to thank the countless city employees who served America in the armed forces and then joined the city to continue to serve the residents of Boise. Your devotion to all of us is incredible.
I want to say directly to veterans; we can never truly pay you back for your service. No pomp and circumstance will ever amount to the debt we owe you, but we will attempt what we can, not with words and ceremony but with deeds.
I occasionally run through Fort Boise. When I do, I remember all the heroes I met last Valentine's Day at the Veterans Affairs Hospital. Before COVID-19 was upon us, I was honored to visit with veterans, hear their stories, and witness the services provided. It is not safe to visit the hospital now but when I put on my mask and keep my distance, I think about the people I met, and I know these precautions are one way to keep our vulnerable veterans safe.
Thinking back on my visit to the VA, I'm reminded of my own grandparents that served our country in WWII. My Grandaddy served in France, my Pap in Italy and my Nana as a nurse.
We are grateful for your service; our nation is stronger because of you. We will do our best to live up to the examples you've set.
