Wayside Weekly
November 11-17

Wayside Friends,
Welcome to another installment of "By the Wayside" Weekly. First, we want to thank and honor the veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. Thank you.
Second, thank you to everyone that voted, reminded others to vote, and/or got involved in the democratic process in some way. Our city, county, state, and country are better off because of it.
Third, as always, if you have anything you would like to add to the weekly email, please contact Robbie in the Church Office (office@waysideucc.org). This includes prayers and Thank You's. The deadline for each week's email is Tuesday morning.

~ Robbie

Zoom Quick Link: Sunday Worship

My UU colleague, Rev. Tandi Rogers, created this ingenious exercise to help feel more balanced during this unique time. If you have an old Trivial Pursuit Game laying around you can make one for yourself. I’m going to go home today and steal some game pieces from my old Trivial Pursuit collecting dust and begin to start this practice today. When everything has felt topsy turvy it’s nice to have something so easy to help feel a sense of normalcy. It’s also a great tool to check in with yourself and make sure you aren’t missing important aspects of life that feed and build you up…especially when the news and pandemic so easily break us down. Below you will find her article describing the SOSPIE practice. You can also visit the original blog here.

We are sheltering in place. And were about losing our minds, losing our center, when I came up with a tool to get us back into balance. We refer to it in our household as "pie." As in, "how are you doing with your pie?" or "Got a full pie yet?"

I repurposed the game pieces from Trivial Pursuit, one for each family member. The little triangles each got marked with a different letter:
  • S - social
  • O - occupational
  • S - spiritual
  • P - physical
  • I - intellectual
  • E - emotional
The idea is that we strive to do something for each letter every day. And we check in about it at dinner. Everyone's game-piece sits waiting at their place at the table. Our twelve year old loves to orchestrate the conversation, which is good, because it was designed to ensure he wasn't all about the video games while we're in home-school mode.

Here are examples of what each could be:
  • S - social: conversations with anyone outside our home via phone or zoom, sending postcards or care-packages.
  • O - occupational: either paying jobs or family jobs around the house, also known as chores.
  • S - spiritual: family chapel, meditation, spiritual journaling, reading Teenage Soup for the Soul, listening to a spiritual podcast.
  • P - physical: biking, walking around the neighborhood, jumprope, weights.
  • I - intellectual: reading, puzzles, trivia cards (that are now untethered from the game and used randomly), documentary.
  • E - emotional: arts and crafts, journalling, talking about feelings with a loved one, blanket fort time.
The interpretation of each person's pie pieces is up to them (within reason.) The magic is in the intentionality and the conversation. I highly recommend this exercise!

  • Our Conference Minister, Rev. Mike Denton sent out an email to the conference email list yesterday to try to offer hope in the midst of increasing COVID rates and the worry it getting worse through winter. This excerpt about butterflies stuck out to me (Robbie):

One of the advantages of having a kid around the house is the opportunity to learn more about things you thought you already thought you knew. A couple of years ago, Leo was learning about what happens when a caterpillar goes through its cocooning stage. What I assumed was that it kind of evolved like a tadpole; that slowly the wings just started to pop out and the body got smaller and, when the wings were ready, it broke through the chrysalis and we got to see a butterfly.

Nope. After it cocoons, the caterpillar uses its own digestive juices to liquefy itself from the inside out. At some point along the way, the cocoon is a liquid-filled little packet. What is left, however, is something and amazing called imaginal cells. These imaginal cells knit themselves together and create something new.

So here we are in what is an isolating moment. There are days it does kinda feel as though I/we are being digested from the inside out. But, what if this is a sort of cocooning moment? What if, instead of imaginal cells, what we’re left with is our imagination, faith, love? What do we need to create in order to be different in the world?

What kind of country might we be able to become if we prepare ourselves to continue to have high numbers of participation? What would it take to build ourselves into people who create a world of equity, consent, and compassion? What would we need to become in order to heal the planet and act in harmony with it?

A message from Pastor Allysa...

Advent is coming! To prepare, I am inviting each of you to help me prepare this season of preparation (see what I did there) by doing two things:

  1. Send me your favorite Christmas hymns! We will feature at least one favorite Christmas hymn in worship on Sundays and the rest in our Christmas Eve worship.

  2. Sign up for Wayside’s first Secret St. Nick present exchange. If you’d like to be given a Secret St. Nick, email Pastor Allysa. Presents should be sent to your secret person by Christmas Eve. Sign up by December 9th.  Names will be given out on December 13th.
