Welcome to the High Country AAA's
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Newsletter!

High Country Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is continuing to work diligently on the development of the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) program. Following the amazing response to the Regional Needs Assessment, the AAA has been working to utilize feedback received to shape program delivery. So far, we have been able to assist families with a variety of needs including assistance accessing school supplies for their children and respite services to provide a short break for grandparents.

Our agency is happy to help with accessing resources such as new clothes or shoes, assistance with school supplies or other educational materials, and possibly home safety improvements. The GRG program is designed to help older adults over the age of 55 who fulfill the primary needs of a minor child or an adult with a disability (aged 18-49) in their home. We continue to look for
more ways to help grandparents and older adult relative caregivers in our region, so if you know of a grandparent raising their grandchild, have them reach out to me!

Today is Veterans Day!
Don't forget to contact your family and friends who have bravely
defended our country and thank them for their service!
High Country AAA would like to extend a special
thank you the veterans in our region.
Happy National Family Caregiver Month!
Each November we celebrate National Family Caregivers Month (NFCM), an entire month dedicated to honoring and appreciating family caregivers around the country. Now in its 24th year of celebration, NFCM is spearheaded by the Caregiver Action Network, a nonprofit who is committed to providing education, peer support, and resources to family caregivers around the country. Through our celebration of caregivers this month, we will be able to:
  • Raise awareness of family caregiver issues
  • Celebrate the efforts of family caregivers
  • Educate family caregivers about self-identification
  • Increase support for family caregivers
We know that family caregivers are the very foundation of long-term care in the U.S. and their service is valued at an estimated $375 billion each year. The majority of family caregivers (66%) are women, and more than 37% of family caregivers have children or grandchildren under 18 years of age living with them. In North Carolina alone, nearly 1 in 10 children is being cared for by a grandparent or other older adult relative. This years theme, #CaregivingInCrisis, wants to highlight the unique challenges that COVID-19 has presented, including complicating access to healthcare and increasing
social isolation. Visit the Caregiver Action Network's NFCM webpage to read more about each of the challenges highlighted this year.
