Keeping HOPE SF’s Promises: Reflections from Fred Blackwell

Since 2005, when I was director of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, HOPE SF has been near and dear to my heart. It’s been a great pleasure for me to be involved with this transformative initiative.

HOPE SF is much more than bricks and mortar. It’s an investment in families, in longtime residents who have lived through decades of neglect as well as decades of promises made – and broken -- by the government. Over the past ten years, HOPE SF has kept its promises. It’s made sure that families are the first to benefit from the re-enfranchisement of their neighborhoods. It’s put residents in the driver’s seat.

Community Healing & Resilience

HOPE SF takes a restorative approach

As government leaders work to repair the systemic harm, HOPE SF residents band together to build community, promote peace, and heal from trauma as a result of historical structures and racist policies that have worked against them. A group of residents, known as the Warriors have held community healing circles. Residents came together for International Day of Peace and Día de los Muertos for music and art to honor loved ones who are no longer with us.

Donor support for HOPE SF has helped residents during uncertain times

Thank you donors for stepping up during a very challenging year to support families. Through your generous financial support, HOPE SF residents have been able to weather the COVID-19 storm. “There were already adverse experiences against HOPE SF residents before COVID, and the pandemic exacerbated those experiences,” says Saidah Leatutufu, the Director of Economic Advancement for HOPE SF.

HOPE SF learning hubs help support and celebrate students

This year has exposed, like never before, how far we have to go to achieve racial equity. One of the most immediate challenges was responding to educational needs, including getting laptops to students and getting households connected to WIFI. A few months into shelter-in-place, HOPE SF established Community Hubs -- where students could focus on schoolwork and access tutors in a safe, socially-distant setting -- at all four HOPE SF sites to ensure that none of our students fall through the educational cracks.

Resident Spotlight
Larry Jones, of Sunnydale puts his community first!

Residents take charge and help their community during COVID with a “big wraparound of love”

This unprecedented pandemic has been very challenging, but it has also highlighted the promise of HOPE SF’s resident-driven framework. Quite literally, without resident leaders, the situation could have been catastrophic. Residents have been delivering food to 4,000 people across all four HOPE SF sites each week and ensuring that residents are kept safe. “It’s a big wraparound of love,” says Larry Jones, senior community liaison for Mercy Housing.
