What else can we say but thank you to all of our customers who made us a priority and popped in to the nursery since the lockdown has been lifted. We've been amazed at the support that we have had, and how eager everyone is to get back to work in their gardens again.

Now that we can all resume (a semblance of) normal life, it seems like our minds have turned to Christmas preparations. In the nursery, we know it's nearly Christmas when we receive the first of the poinsettias, which arrived late last week!  We have made a special space in the nursery for everyone to enjoy.  This week we are receiving an order of potted Christmas trees, so look out for their arrival on our social media feeds.
For many of us, Christmas just wouldn't be complete without a display of our beautiful hydrangeas. They provide instant colour to your garden, and also make a beautiful Christmas gift. Here's our latest delivery patiently waiting until we can find room for them in the nursery! Available in 20cm and 30cm pots.
Every spring, we receive so many orders for Boston Ivy. It is one of the most popular plants in the nursery, due to its many attractive characteristics - its hardiness, the beauty of the autumn foliage, and vigorous growth rate - to name just a few.

This year, we've experienced very high demand, and we do have a waiting list at the moment. Our growers are responding to the demand, so we expect we should start to see stock levels pick up again soon. If you would like to place an order, please call us on 9822 3305.
We have some beautiful Japanese Maples that have just come in recently including a variety of weeping maples. If you are looking for a compact feature tree with gorgeous autumn foliage and you have a spot in your garden that gets morning sun and afternoon shade, then Japanese Maples are our top pick!
Now that we are able to travel a bit further, some of us are thinking about getting down to the beach.

Did you know that our garden design and maintenance team can help you with your beach house garden? We do design consultations either on site at your Mornington Peninsula property, or here in the nursery. We can also visit the property for garden maintenance. Please call us on 9822 3305 if you would like to book a consultation or maintenance visit.

If you are heading down soon to get your garden into shape for the holiday season, we thought we would profile a few tough and hardy plants that are great for coastal areas.
Arthropodium cirratum
(NZ Rock Lily)

This plant is a true survivor, coping very well with tough conditions. NZ Rock Lily is great for a shaded spot. It can also tolerate a sunny position. Perfect for under trees, and very tolerant of dry conditions. NZ Rock Lily looks great in a mass planting, with white flower spikes in spring. It grows around 1m (height) x 1m (spread). A smaller cultivar "Te Puna" grows around 40cm  (height) x 50cm (spread).

Cistus spp
(Rock Rose)

The Cistus genus is a mediterranean plant known for the ability to grow in harsh conditions, making it a great plant for coastal gardens. Cistus enjoys full sun, and actually prefers poor soil conditions - perfect for a low maintenance garden.

Available in stock: Cistus saliviifolius, Cistus formosus, and Cistus "Sunset".

Chinese Star Jasmine

Star Jasmine is flowering now, and you have probably smelt it while out and about! Highly fragrant and prolific flowering, the Chinese Star Jasmine looks amazing when in full flower. It is perfect for covering a fence and will grow quickly once established.

Grows in full sun to part shade in free draining soil. Feed with a fertiliser for flowering plants.
Lampranthus "Cocktail Explosion"

A very hardy spreading succulent with flowers through summer. Perfect for dry, low maintenance gardens, it looks beautiful trailing over retaining walls or the edges of pots. This plant will spread to around 80cm.

Also comes in cultivars "Mauve Explosion" and "Pink Explosion"
Achillea Desert Eve

Achillea is a perfect plant for gardens with poor soils - they actually prefer it that way! Achillea grows in full sun, and flowers from spring through to autumn, where it will then die back over winter, to reappear in spring. Deadhead during flowering, then simply cut it right back once it has finished.

This is the Terracotta variety, and is also available in Cream.
Lotus

A very hardy perennial in lovely grey tones with vibrant yellow/orange flowers, the trailing lotus is great for coastal gardens. Use it as a ground cover where it will spread between 50cm to 1m. Or plant them in pots or hanging baskets to trail over the edge. It likes a full sun location, and will flower during spring and summer.

Have you ever noticed these in your garden? These little eggs suspended on fine hair like stalks are lacewing eggs. Lacewings are beneficial insects, the larvae eat the bad bugs - aphids, mealy bugs, scale and caterpillars. If you see them, leave them be and be happy knowing that they are out there working hard for you, keeping your garden healthy!

If you would like to know more about beneficial insects, you can read a post recently published on our website that looks at managing insect populations in your garden.
