Program Updates

Successful COVID-19 Testing and Asian Food Giveaway Event on Nov. 23.

Supported by the Ramsey County, and MN Dept. of Health, local Asian American community-based agencies pulled together a successful COVID-19 Testing and Asian Food Giveaway event on Nov. 23.

The event was intentionally hosted at the Vietnamese church - Church of St. Columba in St. Paul, a location where the Asian American communities are familiar and feel comfortable with. The Church's 2 parking lots supported both testing and food giveaway. Asian American members registered online, and drove through to pick up free Asian food box and a 25lb of rice, then headed to the next parking lot for the COVID-29 testing.

(Click to see full size image)

Asian Media Access' staff and youth were present to support contact-less, back-trunk loading of all the goodies, as well as helped delivering the 25lb of rice to many seniors who lived near-by.

Other local agencies of CAPI, Hmong American Partnership, KaRen Association of MN, and the Vietnamese Social Services' staff served as interpreters for onsite registrations, and shared the information about Asian language hotlines to better answer COVID-19 related questions. Additionally, members of the Philippines Nurses of MN were on hand to help with the nasal swap. Their presence was a comfort for many Asian seniors.

Within 6 hours, our Team tested 695 members, with most being Asian American seniors and young children. The event successfully reached its goals to 1) Encourage hard-to-reached Asian American members to get tested at a place/time that the communities felt comfortable with, and 2) Supported peace-of-mind to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday together with family members.

A great event with a great community support!!!

Advertising Agency Russell Herder Supporting Youth Training

Asian Media Access worked with an advertising agency Russell Herder in designing a 4-part series of training to engage youth of color to better develop effective communication strategies.

Since Oct., the firm's Chief Creative Officer Brian Herder, Lead Content Strategist Kate Krug, and Arts Director Zack Spanton took on the initiatives to engage with AMA's youth for a series trainings with the intention of helping youth of color improve their communication skills, as well as inspiring them for a possible multimedia career pathways

The series was designed with a potential Program of Gambling Prevention campaign in mind, with:

a. Session I: Messaging - How to create messages that young people need to hear, and what has worked well for organizations on related topics and, specifically, what is most important to convey on this subject to help educate other young people about problem gambling. From there, they transitioned into a discussion about how youth can develop messages for social media, posters, text messaging, animation, experiential (e.g. dance, music), and video, etc.

b. Session II: Creative Development - Continuing the discussion with youth to gauge how creative development process works (e.g. who, how, when), and discussed visual needs – what’s important, how to most effectively show it, and what technical considerations are important (e.g. typography, photography, graphics).

c. Session III: Social Media - How to deploy creative works through diverse media channels to the communities. They discussed the pros and cons of various platforms and explored together what the preferences are and how to optimize them.

d. Session IV: Finalization - Lastly, the Team worked with AMA youth to finalize the campaign elements and made plans to get them sent and distributed. They also discussed the importance of how to measure the impact they made through the Program Gambling Prevention Campaign.

AMA youth not only learnt from the professionals with step-by-step guidance how to deploy the Program Gambling Prevention campaign targeting other youth, but also learnt the ins & outs of graphic design. Most importantly, support from the Russel Herder let our young people experienced a real-world case study, and inspire them to follow their dreams in the multimedia fields.

The sessions will follow health and wellbeing expert guidance including hosting the sessions in large studios with additional ventilation and limiting the number of participants being served at a time to create safe physical distancing.

"Health and wellbeing isn’t just about our individual goals of working out and eating right, our wellbeing also needs healing practices in community settings that allow for deep restoration, compassionate connection, and a holistic approach to feeling well,” said Sally St. John, senior director of wellbeing and integrative care at the Y.

St. John adds, “Sustaining our energy and wellbeing through the long complex journey towards health, equity and inclusion is difficult. Our bodies hold generational and current day stress, anxiety, depression and trauma that make it a windy road. Therefore, self-care practices need to intersect with community-care actions to create a successful social justice equation.”

“The YMCA is honored to be working in partnership with Bill and Penny George and The George Family Foundation to provide integrative healing practices to the community,” said Glen Gunderson, president and CEO of the Y.  “When individuals and communities are given the right to self-care practices, people start believing their lives matter, their choices matter and their journey can be something to embrace rather than fear.”

These challenges are affecting many of the families we serve, and we will bring influencers together to discuss how we can support our communities.

We’ll hear from champions of early brain development, like keynote speaker Sondra Samuels, President & CEO of the Northside Achievement Zone and Board Member of HealthPartners, who will be discussing the intersection of race, equity and early brain development. Sondra will discuss the impact of the racialized trauma on our youngest Minnesotans caused by COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd, and why adaptive leadership is needed more than ever to support young families.

The COVID-19 pandemic has starkly illustrated these inequities, which makes pursuing equity more important now than ever.

In the first webinar of our COVID-19 series, we’re taking an in-depth look at how bias limits quality care for those who need it most during this national crisis and sharing resources and ideas focused on achieving health equity and combatting the health disparities rooted in the structures of our systems.

Anyone can get COVID-19. However, older adults and people of any age with serious underlying medical conditions might be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Good health depends on everything that touches our lives: families; how and where we live, work, and go to school; and access to doctors and to clean water, air, and land. It also depends on having an equal voice about the things that touch our lives.

PLACE: Online, Register https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYuc--vrTovE93wuVPnP2vgC14DHGANvM3w
TOPIC: White Fragility: When Good People Behave Badly

Often, good intentions receive more attention than the negative impacts they may produce. In the same way that white superiority created the systems and structures we have in place, it also created the ability for the people who benefit to overlook the effects on those who are marginalized or injured. When confronted with these truths, the reactions of many if not most white Americans fall under the category of white fragility. This is an intense focus on the feelings of white people when their understanding of themselves and their world is challenged. White fragility feeds on the fact that white people generally do not see themselves in racial terms and therefore are not affected by racism. It also works through a simplistic understanding of racism and a belief that white people are generally objective and free of bias. This webinar highlights the ways white fragility appears in the workplace and how it can be addressed for individual and organizational growth.

Maybe the saying shouldn’t be “you are what you eat,” but rather “you are where you eat.” Social and economic factors, such as where someone lives, have powerful influences on people’s health. This association holds true not only for access to healthy food but also for other things such as housing conditions and green space availability. Such factors impact risk of exposure and susceptibility to many diseases and conditions, including COVID-19.

So much of the work of prevention centers on conversations. It is in conversation that the gaps between perceived and actual community norms are explored. At the meeting. In the hallway. Sitting in the bleachers next to another parent. This is where perspectives can be shifted. Equipping coalition/team/community members with skills to effectively facilitate these conversations without raising defensiveness provides a significant impact. In these skill-building workshops, Jason will introduce the concepts of “Let’s Talk” while providing examples of the advantages of this communication style versus other approaches
