Welcome to WAYJO Club

Registrations open this Wednesday!

The West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) will not be holding band auditions for 2021. COVID-19 caused the loss of rehearsal and performance opportunities through most of 2020, so WAYJO has offered 2020 band members continuation into 2021.

Instead, welcome to WAYJO Club, an exciting new opportunity for aspiring instrumentalists and vocalists, aged 12-18 years and located in Perth during 2021, to learn about and participate in jazz music making with WAYJO in a social and inclusive setting.

There will be NO AUDITION required to take part, WAYJO Club is open to all young musicians with a basic understanding of music.

WAYJO Club is a program that will give you access to networks, resources, content, open rehearsals and jazz day-camps. These will be delivered March-November as a combination of both online and in-person sessions (pandemic advisories permitting).

The year is divided into 2 semesters - so you can choose to participate for a single semester, or book the full year in advance to enjoy a discount;

SEMESTER 1

March 2: Online Resources Sent
April 6: Online Resources Sent
April 11: Jazz Camp
April 14: Invitation to an open rehearsal with the Wednesday Night Orchestra
May 4: Online Resources Sent
May 11: Invitation to an open rehearsal with the Tuesday Night Orchestra
June 1: Online Resources Sent
June 20: Jazz Camp

SEMESTER 2

August 3: Online Resources Sent
September 7: Online Resources Sent
September 12: Jazz Camp
September 20: Invitation to an open rehearsal with the Monday Night Orchestra
October 5: Online Resources Sent
October 17: Jazz Camp and Audition Preparation
November 2: Online Resources Sent
November 17: Invitation to an open rehearsal with the Wednesday Night Orchestra

WAYJO CLUB FEES

Single Semester: $150 (plus $9.34 booking fee)
Full Year: $250 (plus $15.93 booking fee)

WAYJO Club registrations open 9.00am Wednesday 18 November 2020, and close 5.00pm Monday 15 February 2021 - if not filled prior. Participants are limited to 50 per semester.

A Summer Wonderland

It's a Jazz Christmas Party

Let WAYJO take you into a Summer Wonderland as we Deck the Rechabite Hall in the sounds of a swinging jazzmas.

This not so Silent Night will bring you Duke Ellington's version of the Nutcracker and some brandy infused Christmas carols.

Join the WAYJO Tuesday and Wednesday Night Orchestras in a fun ending to this crazy year. Come and party with WAYJO-HO-HO!

Perth International Jazz Festival 2020

This year all three WAYJO bands were a part of the 2020 Perth International Jazz Festival, celebrating the joy of performing live music, after what was a crazy year for WAYJO and all musicians alike.

The Wednesday Night Orchestra performed a set of new big band music penned by international guests Linda May Han Oh and Fabian Almazan. This challenging program of music filled The Rechabite Hall with modern jazz to a near capacity crowd. The musicians of WNO rose to the challenge of this sophisticated music like the true professionals they are.

Both WAYJO MinterEllison Monday and Tuesday Night Orchestras also featured at the Hyde Park Jazz Picnic on the most glorious day of spring so far. Our very own Jess Herbert was the MC for the afternoon. Both bands sounded amazing and had dancers up through their set.

It was a truly great feeling for us to be involved in the jazz festival this year, and another great opportunity to present our young musicians, plus premiere some bold new jazz!

Join The Gemma Farrell Quartet in a night of new original material leading up to their highly anticipated second album release.

The Gemma Farrell group formed when she moved back to Perth in 2013, after six years away. The group had their debut performance for the Perth Jazz Society at the Perth International Jazz Festival in 2015. Launching their debut album in June 2018 'Organised Chaos' - the album featured on RTRFM as the local feature album, and the group nominated for Best Jazz Act at the 2018 WAM awards.

The Gemma Farrell Quartet are: Gemma Farrell - Saxophones, Sam Hadlow - Trombone, Dan Garner - Guitar, Kate Pass - Bass & Ryan Daunt - Drums.
