Diversity and Social Justice

November 2020

Dear DSJ Colleague,

You are receiving this newsletter given your ongoing teaching, interests, and valuable contributions to the Diversity and Social Justice (DSJ) CAP Component.

Our collective responsibility as UD educators to promote the dignity, rights and responsibilities of all persons and peoples is imperative as always, especially through our DSJ courses aiming and aspiring to engage various dimensions of social justice, bias, intercultural competence and intersectionality.

I would like to express my gratitude for all your hard work, energy and efforts going into shaping and teaching DSJ courses in these challenging and difficult times. Let us remember and hold each other accountable to actively care for ourselves and practice wellbeing.

Outlined below are some existing and new platforms designed to help us connect, create, collaborate and support each other as a virtual community of DSJ educators at UD. In addition to regular DSJ newsletter issues like this one, you will find a new CAP DSJ webpage, LibGuide, blog series, upcoming events and other engagement opportunities.

I hope you’ll take a few moments to explore these spaces, provide feedback, share content, and more importantly, consider attending our first DSJ Hangout on Wednesday November 18
Our goal is to carve similar opportunities at alternative days and times in the future but I felt compelled to convene a space before the end of the semester for us to meet, socialize, casually engage around classroom experiences, as well as address any CAP-DSJ related questions. It would be great if you can drop by.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out if I can be of any support or assistance as you wrap up Fall 2020 and plan for Spring 2021.

Looking forward,

Youssef Farhat

DSJ LibGuide

Launched by the 2019 DSJ Curriculum Fellows, this LibGuide hosts resources aiming to engage various dimensions of diversity and social justice including intersectionality, bias, and intercultural competence. Content is organized by dimension and proficiency level. DSJ LibGuide
Feel free to bookmark these pages, include them in your syllabus and on your Isidore DSJ course site, and please send us any content you would like to see shared.
Call for Blogs

CAP is kicking off its blog series and seeking stories to promote the exciting work taking place in and around the classroom especially in DSJ courses. Both faculty and students are invited to write a blog for CAP reflecting on inspiring projects and research, learning experiences and pedagogy, or any insights contributing to the community at large.

Feel free to pitch stories, share this opportunity with students and consider including it part of your syllabus in future courses. Blog Guidelines
Diversity ILG Working Group

The group is convening this AY with a three-fold goal: to to benchmark institutions with successful scaffolded Diversity Institutional Learning Goals that draw from both curricular and co-curricular work on campus; assess students' university experience with these offerings; and build campus-wide connections that foreground a complex and robust definition of diversity.

Stay tuned for engagement efforts including a Spring 2021 survey designed to capture student experiences.
