Bigger footprint

By David Wylie

The Valens Company has received a licence to grow its footprint.

Health Canada has granted the end-to-end cannabis company an amended licence for its second Kelowna facility, called K2.

Its 42,000-square-foot expansion on Carion Road increases the company’s capacity to manufacture a range of extraction products, including vapes, sprays, tinctures, capsules, topicals, and beverages.

Valens already produces dozens of white-label products, including the brands Verse, BRNT, and nuance.

The new scalable manufacturing facility is a significant boost to its production capacity and capabilities, says Valens in a statement.

“The full build-out of our K2 facility, and now the ability to commence operations, allows us to hit a key milestone in our corporate strategy by the end of fiscal 2020, which is the significant expansion of our processing and manufacturing capacity to maintain our speed to market and cost advantage across all 2.0 product categories,” said CEO Tyler Robson.

“The investment we have made in our white label and custom manufacturing capabilities, paired with Valens’ custom-engineered processing platform, will continue to set us apart not only domestically, but in global markets as we look to replicate the success of our business model overseas. We look forward to continuing to produce the premium and reliable derivative products our customers and consumers know us for, but with this expansion, at record speeds and in new, innovative formats.”

Valens is one of the largest third-party extraction companies in Canada. It has an annual capacity of 425,000 kg of dried cannabis and hemp biomass.

Last holdout no more

The location of the first municipal approved, Budding Creations Cannabis.

The last Okanagan cannabis retail holdout has approved its first store.

Peachland council voted at Tuesday’s meeting to approve an application from Budding Creations Cannabis Corp.

“The submitted application package met or exceeded all of the requirements that the policy outlined,” says the district.

Council’s positive recommendation sends the application to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch for final approval.

It’s owned by a group of local residents, including well-know local businessman Steve Allison.

The store will be located at 5830 Beach Ave., Unit B.

There are now nearly 60 licensed cannabis stores in the Okanagan, though not all are open yet.

Drop the boogeyman shtick

It’s high time for the Conservatives to let go of their outdated views of cannabis and stop fear mongering.

They need to distance themselves from baseless claims, such as those made on social media this week by failed Conservative Party leadership candidate Peter MacKay.

In fact, fiscal conservatives should fully endorse legalization. It provides individual freedom and responsibility, opens a new free market, and reduces government spending on petty drug enforcement.

Growing cannabis brings in billions

Cannabis is a serious cash crop in Canada.

There was a massive boost in farm cash receipts over the first three quarters of 2020, according to Statistics Canada data released Wednesday.

“Cannabis receipts rose 112.4% year over year to $3 billion in the first three quarters of 2020, accounting for just over two-fifths of the increase in crop receipts,” says StatsCan.

Excluding cannabis, crop receipts would have risen 9.2%, says StatsCan.

Cannabis production was worth about $2.3 billion in farm cash receipts in 2019, a massive increase from $564 million in 2018. Growing weed is now worth about one-quarter of what farmers receive for canola—the country’s largest crop.

Candy Cane Crush by Legend

Perfect for Christmastime, Legend has released a candy cane cannabis infused chocolate.

Its minty taste and gentle crunch is a sweet treat for the holidays. We’ve been busy little elves putting them in Christmas cards for our friends.

Like its other milk chocolate offerings, such as raspberry, the flavour mellows into creaminess and a silky texture.

The 46% cocoa milk chocolate used by Legend comes from renowned master chocolatier Bernard Callebaut.

The bite-sized 10-gram bar of chocolate is infused with 10 mg of THC extracted from cannabis using CO2. There’s no hint of cannabis taste.

It’s scored into four pieces (2.5 mg of THC each).

Legend’s offerings are some of the most affordable chocolates at $3.99. They also have plain milk chocolate and dark chocolate (70% cocoa).

Legend is part of Indiva, which also makes the well-priced Bhang cholcolates.

Renowned chocolatier had bad fortune

A celebrated Calgary chocolate maker, Callebaut founded Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut, which he grew to more than 30 locations before going bankrupt.

After his bad fortune, Callebaut started over and founded Master Chocolat.

The chocolatier was the first North American to be bestowed the honour of “l’Ordre Internationale de la Gastronomie Francaise”, recognized by the French Government for outstanding contribution to the culinary arts.
