Save the date!

The Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation (BBPF) is inviting you, our park heroes, to an online event to say thank you for all that you and your group do for your park.

It has been a challenging year and our parks have proven to be crucial to our health and wellbeing – they have been real lifelines for many during the pandemic.

Because you give our parks & green spaces the extra TLC they need, BBPF, BCC and B&NES Council want to say thank you. Your efforts take our parks from being good, to being great.

We hoped to be able to do this in person but for now, we’ll will come together online:
  • Date: Saturday 19th December 2020
  • Time: 10-11am
  • Location: Zoom
This event is open to members of parks groups and others who volunteer in parks across Bristol and Bath.

Please share this save the date with all active members of your group and we will send further details in the coming weeks.

We can’t wait to see you!

Ella’s Volunteering Update – Zoom Tue 1st Dec 4pm

I hope you're all doing well, keeping safe and still managing to spend plenty of time outdoors in these shorter days.

As we approach the end of "lockdown #2" I wanted to remind you of an upcoming Zoom update we'll be hosting to touch base with you all and outline our approach for the next few months.

The Zoom meeting will be held on Tuesday 1st December at 4pm. You can join via the following details:

Join Zoom Meeting
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86727550201?pwd=a1ZwRVZHREM2YmE4S3Z4cU03Sjh5QT09

Meeting ID: 867 2755 0201
Passcode: 424996

Any amendments to our volunteering policy for volunteering in Tier 3 will need to be signed off by our Head of Parks and Public Health, but I'll run through a draft version during the Zoom to keep you all in the loop.

We're really sad not to be spending these chillier days out in parks with you all, there's nothing like a bit of bramble bashing to keep warm. We hope that whilst group sessions are paused, those of you who have wanted to have been able to find ways of remaining active, even roping extra members of your household into volunteering alongside you where perhaps they might not have done before!

For our staff led sessions, we're in regular conversations with the Rangers, Gardeners, ParkWork and One Tree per Child Teams. As soon as we're able to, these sessions will relaunch. You'll be first to hear.

Hope to see some of you via Zoom next Tuesday 1st December at 4pm. In the meantime, reach out if you have any questions or concerns about volunteering. Remember to take time to rest and look after yourselves.

Thank you for all your efforts of 2020 so far! You have all been the silver lining on many a grey day.

Parks Operational Co-ordinator (North)

Mary O’Connell has recently been appointed to fill the vacant north area Parks Co-Ordinator role. Mary asked me to send you this by way of introduction…

I look forward to working in partnership with Bristol Park Forum on behalf of Bristol City Council in the role of Parks Operational Coordinator for the North. It is fantastic to see how many active Friend of Groups there are, caring for and making a huge difference to Bristol Parks. I look to support, encourage and work collaboratively with these groups.

I previously worked for a charity called Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST) in London as Head of Parks and Community. The charity aims to create or improve local green spaces through community involvement. We ran regular volunteer groups to maintain and improve parks in central London, supported Friends of groups, organised community events and supported local residents and businesses to improve their local environment.

I look forward to using my skills and experience to support Friends of Groups and volunteering in Bristol. It is a privilege to work for Bristol City Council in their beautiful open spaces and hope to work together to protect and enhance the parks, for everyone to enjoy.

Kind Regards,

Mary O’Connell

Mary’s appointment means that for the first time for a long time, all three of Bristol Parks areas now have both the Area Manager and Parks Co-ordinator roles filled.

North – Caroline Ennion & Mary O’Connell
East & Central – John Walters & Teija Ahjokoski
South – Tom Penn & Steve Clampin

Your thoughts on the future of the region

People living and working in the West of England are being asked for their views about the future of the region. The feedback will help shape a Spatial Development Strategy for the West of England Combined Authority area which includes Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire Councils. Once the Spatial Development Strategy is agreed and published, it will form part of the ‘development plan’ alongside Bristol’s own Local Plan.

To access the survey and further information please click on the future of the region survey link which will direct you to the West of England Combined Authority website. The survey closes on 14 December 2020.

Interesting Trustee Role

There is a unique opportunity to join the board of ‘The Kenneth Allsop Memorial Trust’ charity that owns and manages Steep Holm Island.

The Island has been inhabited on and off for centuries, is full of hidden surprises and is steeped in history. It is a nature reserve, bird sanctuary, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its rare plants, including the May Flowering Wild Mediterranean Peony.

The charity seeks to preserve and enhance the island’s natural beauty and landscape, together with its antiquities, wildlife and scientific interest for the public enjoyment and education of the wildlife.

Closing date is midnight 31st January 2021
