Before being formally denied by the Trump administration last week, the highly contentious Pebble Mine, nestled in southwest Alaska’s prolific salmon-producing Bristol Bay watershed, sought to develop the largest untapped deposits of copper and gold in the world. Since May 2019, Hakai Magazine reporter Ashley Braun has carved out a niche, covering the emerging developments and potential environmental impacts of the proposed project. Her stories have covered glaring gaps in the company’s mitigation plans, the secretly recorded “Pebble Tapes,” and regulatory changes by the Trump administration that would expedite the mine’s approval.

On December 3 at 11:30 a.m. (PDT), join Hakai Magazine news editor Colin Schultz as he interviews Braun about how she followed the Pebble Mine developments, found stories bigger news outlets missed, and maintained relationships with sources for controversial stories.
