From the Principal…
What an extraordinary year it has been! I'm not one to dwell on the negatives as no matter what happens in life there is an opportunity to grow as humans and find ways to support one another. From my view of the school and our community I can honestly say that I am extremely proud of what we have achieved this year.
Thank you to our wonderful staff - teachers, cleaners, school officers, gardeners, education assistants, student services support staff, librarians, visiting youth workers, IT techs, AIEOs, Home Ec and Lab Assistants and our trainees! many and of you are unsung heroes and deserve enormous gratitude!
This newsletter is packed full of the amazing experiences our students have been having in the second half of this term. It's amazing that we also managed to fit in exams and reporting! Semester 2 reports will be issued via Connect in coming days.
Don't forget that we now have a second-hand uniform and book platform - Sustainable School Shop. Instructions for how to use this are in this newsletter.
Also, take note of when our uniform shop, Perm-a-Pleat will be open during the holidays as they will be closed for a period of time.
I hope that everyone has a wonderful festive season!

PBS Class Challenge
In term 4, all year 7, 8, 9 and 10 classes competed in the PBS Class Challenge. In this challenge, each class worked as a team and each team was scored on their ability to demonstrate our school’s core values of respect, excellence and commitment. Each core value was marked out of 10 making the total possible score for each class out of 30.
Every week for core subjects, class captains got their teachers to fill in a scorecard and the captains would then hand them in to student services. The scores were added up and the classes with the highest scores at the end of the competition were the winners, earning some great prizes.
There were 2 divisions, a merit select division and a mainstream division and the scores in both divisions were very close. In the end, the 10-1 class won the merit select division, with the 8S class finishing second and the 7SA class third. In the mainstream division: 8-2 were the winners, with 8-3 in second place and 7-2 in third place.
This competition was a great example of how we can work together at JTC to best demonstrate our core values of excellence, respect and commitment and helped our school provide some positive rewards to get us through to the end of the year.

Year 8 - Bushrangers Camp
|
|
|
|
by students - Justus Tuck, Ethan Thomas and
Aynjel Deslandes
For many kids attending this bush rangers camp was their first real crack at a team building getaway. Starting off on a Tuesday afternoon, after packing of course, two buses filled with eager and enthusiastic kids embarked on their journey. Shortly after dropping off luggage at the Dawesville Marine Centre, the whole team carried on towards Lake Clifton, the Thrombolites. Where we learnt about the history of the Earth, and how we largely have the thrombolites to thank for the world we have today.
The day after, Mr T travelled to the Marine Centre just after breakfast, he taught us various bush skills, including methods to starting sights and ways to catch and create drinkable water. We all love and enjoyed having him teach us, it was an interesting informative experience.
After lunch the same day, we all quickly entered the buses and ventured to Trees Adventure. About 5-10 minutes outside of Dwellingup. Well and truly into the hills Trees Adventure can be found. Its an honestly thrilling experience that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. We scaled obstacles, ziplined and swung on ropes 15m plus off the ground, making some of us live our dreams as Tarzan.
After a good night sleep in the tents, back at the marine centre, some of us could argue that our last day at the camp, was the best. The Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh came down and assisted us in rotational activities, which were to be honest, extremely fun. The activities ranged from fishing, paddle boarding and raft building. At around 2pm we all started packing up and loading the trailers. A hard task for some to say the least.
We are all so thankful for the experiences and there's not one person that hasn't taken a positive piece of information, and numerous positive experiences. It was an awesome time.

The Orienteering Winners
On Wednesday the 25th of November, Mrs Hill and Mr Bell organised a camp to Lake Leschenaultia for three days. We departed on the Wednesday at 9:10 and made our way to the Midland Shopping Centre and Cinema. There, we watched ‘The Comeback Trail’. We enjoyed the movie with drinks and food, then made our way to the food court to have lunch and walk around the shops. At 1:30, we got back onto the buses and made our way to camp. Once we got there, we unpacked our bags and got ready to go to the lake.
We stayed at the lake for a few hours and did Mr Sara’s Olympic Activity, Classic Catch. We had to jump off the pontoon and catch the tennis ball throw into the water. Most teams participated and we finished the day hamburgers and hotdogs for dinner and Mrs Hill’s Olympic Activity, Dutch Auction. You had to collect items that belonged to your group and a list was read out, if your item was called you need to hold it up, first to hold it up gets 50 bonus points. We went to bed to get ready for the next day.
We woke up on Thursday and had cereal and bacon and egg rolls for breakfast. We went back to the lake to do Mrs Naidoo’s Olympic Activity. We had to fill a bucket full of water using a cup, however the buckets and cups had holes in them. We then had a swim for a couple of hours then headed back to camp to do Mr Bell’s Olympic Activity, Inflatable Obstacle Course. We had get two people across the course and back in a short amount of time. We then went back to the lake for a swim before dinner. For dinner we had spaghetti and did Mr Dawson’s Olympic Activity, Crossing the River. We got three to four mats and had to get the team across without touching the ground or letting the mats go. We then watched Space Jam and School of Rock before bed. We went to bed and got up to have our last day at camp.
We had leftovers for breakfast and went back to the lake for Mr Hayes’ Olympic Activity, Orienteering. We had to take selfies at all the marks and got bonus points for most creative picture. Some of the students got food from the café at the lake, where they met a friendly parrot. We then headed back to camp to pack our things up and lest camp after lunch and winners prizes. Throughout the camp we had bonus points up for offer. One of the activities was to put the supervising teachers in age order. The Dogs got the closest, winning 50 Bonus points. We had other bonus points for people volunteering to help or for being genuinely nice.
Overall we all had heaps of fun and it will be a time we remember for a long time.

"Feel the Colour"
On Friday 6th November 2020, Year 7-9 students from the Tindale campus participated in John Tonkin College’s first Colour Explosion Fun Run. The students from Year 10.1 & 10.3 who facilitated the event showed excellent leadership skills before, during & after the event & demonstrated the core values of our school: Excellence, Respect & Commitment.
The Year 10s hard work contributed towards the smooth running of the games, sausage sizzle & the closing fun run. Overall, the event was an astounding success, where all students participating in the event engaged with enthusiasm & pure joy.
One Colour Explosion Fun Run, however, was not enough for our team! We had caught the colour bug. On Tuesday 17th November 2020, the Year 11s were also encouraged to embrace the colour at our MET campus. To bring closure to their busy year, Year 10 student councillors facilitated the Colour Explosion Fun Run for the Year 11s amidst sumo wrestling, water dunking and enormous tumbling inflatable balls. It was a perfect day and there were smiles all around!
Students from 10-3 used the money they had raised from their Paying it Forward initiative to purchase a few of the Year 12 Graduation books, which were gifted to five of our deserving Year 12 leavers at the Graduation breakfast on 18th November 2020. This important book of memories provided a snapshot of the Year 12's journey at John Tonkin College and captures important times of laughter and learning.
The Colour Explosion Fun Runs will undoubtedly provide lasting memories for our students. These acts of sharing laughter and joy with others, brought together students from all years and on both campuses. This colourful "Pay it Forward" initiative certainly made our college even stronger and more cohesive and has paved the path for future fun run events. Well done John Tonkin College students ... we definitely embraced the colour!!
Until the next time

Containers for Change
(Refunds for Eligible Recyclable Containers)
As many would have heard by now Western Australia has joined the revolution and implementing the Containers for Change program from 1st October 2020.
This is a State-wide container deposit scheme that lets you cash in eligible drink containers for 10-cents each.
In WA, we use more than 1.3 billion drink containers each year, enough to line a path from Perth to Broome, with many of these currently ending up as litter on the side of the road or in landfill, and most of them are made of materials that are easily recyclable.
Eligible containers can be returned in two ways :
- Drop off at a Refund Point for your refund
- Donate to John Tonkin College who will collect containers as a fundraising opportunity
Therefore if you have containers and would like to donate them to John Tonkin College then please drop off in either of the cages when dropping or collecting students :
- Near the Exit Gates at Tindale Campus
- Outside the Library (near the Bus Shed) in the pickup & drop-off lane at MET Campus
Lists of eligible containers are found on https://www.containersforchange.com.au/wa/how-it-works
Please do not deposit ineligible containers into the JTC cages as there will be a cost for them to be removed which decreases the refund for containers provided back to John Tonkin College?
If you are transporting the containers to the cages within boxes or bags, please empty the eligible containers only into these cages?
Thank you for your assistance in helping keep our State cleaner, and helping JTC raise some funds which will be used for the benefit of students.
