November highlights

Updates from the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities (CRED)

November has been a busy month for CRED with almost weekly sittings of the full Commission, alongside its other priority engagements and roundtables.

The Commission's call for evidence ran throughout November. It received over 2,000 responses from across the UK which will further inform the discussion on improving outcomes across the whole population.

The Commission will now analyse the responses and begin writing a report outlining the government’s response.
 

Minister for Equalities speaks at Action on Pre-eclampsia's annual event

The Minister for Equalities, Kemi Badenoch, spoke about her work on maternal health disparities and personal experiences of maternity services at a global event with over 300 experts hosted by Action on Pre-eclampsia.

The Minister's speech sparked discussion and stressed the importance of encouraging pregnant women to make early visits to hospital, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
 

Using data to address algorithmic bias

The Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation published a review into bias in algorithmic decision-making. The review examines sectors such as policing, financial services, recruitment and local government, and argues that data is still crucial to combatting bias to create a fairer, more equal society.
 

Good practice on in-work progression – call for evidence extended

The Department for Work and Pensions is seeking views on the challenges and benefits to progression in low-pay sectors, and examples of good practice across the country.

The consultation has been extended to 18 December 2020 and invites views on the following:

  • specific barriers to progression in retail, hospitality, construction, business support services, and care work

  • impact of progression pathways and other initiatives on businesses

  • benefits of identifying and nurturing existing talent

  • the importance of progression for enabling and empowering people to change jobs

  • how to embed a culture of lifelong learning in the workforce

  • the role of Jobcentres in supporting progression
