WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2ND, RD38 MONTHLY MEETING
On Zoom at 7pm. Our last meeting of the year. A Zoom registration link, Full Agenda, and minutes to the November meeting will be provided in a later message. As usual, all Democrats are welcome to attend the meeting, but advance registration will be required. A key agenda item will be to discuss the January 2021 meeting which will be a Caucus to form the RD38 Committee to serve for the next four years.
JANUARY CAUCUS -- Date to be Determined
The date and time of the January Caucus are set by the County Chair. Full rules on the process are contained in the County party rules, available at https://www.deldems.org/sites/deldems/files/Sussex%20County%20Rules%202013.pdf. Of course, these rules were written before the Covid-19 pandemic, and have not been updated to reflect the virtual meeting methods that are currently necessary.
But, here is a quick overview of some key aspects of the process.
The Caucus is open to all Registered Democrats living in the district, but there is no “Proxy” attendance. That is, you can’t have someone else represent you.
The meeting will be run by outgoing chairman.
Any attendee can nominate themselves to be a member of the Committee. There will be a number of vacancies beyond the current (incumbent) members as some will not be seeking another term. In theory, the new Committee might comprise all new members, but that is unlikely. The process for winnowing the nominees and electing new members is outlined in the county party rules cited above.
Once the new committee has been elected, those members then elect the Officers. Currently that would be the Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and Digital Chair. Some of the current officers have indicated that they would be interested/willing to serve as officers, in similar or different positions, in the new term. Other current officers have indicated that they wish to not serve in such a position going forward.
Please consider serving on the Committee, as either a member of officer. The struggle to represent the values of the Democratic Party will continue in Sussex County.
GEORGIA SENATE RUNOFFS
The runoff election will be on January 5th. The voter registration deadline for that election is December 7th. Early voting will begin on December 14th.
If you want to help, consider donations directly to either or both of the Ossoff and Warnock campaigns. Direct donations are considered “hard money” in campaign finance law, and can be used by the campaigns any way they choose including mailings, canvassing, voter registration, digital, broadcast, and print ads. They can target voters in the ways they think most likely to help them win.
Rita has indicated that she will be receiving “Get Out The Vote” postcards through the Indivisible organization to target the Georgia campaigns by Wednesday (11/25). Like the postcard campaigns she worked on before the November election, she will divide these cards and the associated address lists into packets of 50. The Vote Forward organization is also sponsoring a campaign for the Georgia Runoffs. This campaign is to write letters for the Georgia runoffs. You can read more about and sign up for this campaign at www.votefwd.org.
STATE PARTY CHAIRMAN STEPS DOWN
Erik Raser-Schramm has stepped down from his position to take a new job. The Vice-Chair, Betsy Maron has assumed the Chair position.
