Payload Qualification Facilities grant opens

A $2.5 million grant is available under the Space Infrastructure Fund to deliver an internationally recognised space payload testing and qualification capability. It will deliver facilities to support manufacturing and streamline the testing of space equipment in Australia.
A program under the $19.5 million Space Infrastructure Fund, this grant opportunity closes on 23 December 2020.

Enrico Palermo announced as new Agency Head

The Hon. Karen Andrews, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, has announced that Enrico Palermo, Virgin Galactic’s Chief Operating Officer, will return home to Australia to replace the Australian Space Agency's inaugural Head, Dr Megan Clark AC.
Dr Clark will finish in the role at the end of December, before commencing as the Chair of the Australian Space Agency Advisory Board in the New Year. Read more

Agency supports Hayabusa2 re-entry

Australia will be part of a milestone in space discovery when the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA’s) Hayabusa2 mission returns the first ever sub surface asteroid samples to Earth in December.
The Australian Space Agency and the Department of Defence are supporting JAXA to successfully retrieve the Hayabusa2 sample return capsule. The capsule will return to the ground with samples from the asteroid Ryugu, while the Hayabusa2 spacecraft will re-join its interplanetary transfer orbit.

Detecting invasive grasses from space

Researchers from CSIRO, Charles Darwin University and The University of Western Australia have developed a machine-learning approach that reliably detects invasive gamba grass from high-resolution satellite imagery. The project, funded by the Australian Government’s National Environmental Science Program under the Northern Australia Environmental Resources Hub, is part of a larger effort to detect and map gamba grass throughout the north. Space Industry Key Skills Gap Survey

SmartSat CRC is undertaking research to identify present and future key skills gaps within the Australian space industry. The outcomes of this study will allow SmartSat and the Australian Space Agency to target appropriate areas within their respective skills development programs to meet current and future job skills needs. Akin develops AI space support crew

Artificial intelligence (AI) company Akin is expanding capacity in the space industry with a grant from the Australian Space Agency’s International Space Investment initiative. Akin is creating software for a prototype AI space crew. The crew will support engineers to complete complex test procedures, with the end goal to showcase the role of robots in assisting astronauts in space habitats. Akin is partnering with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to design the AI crew. Read more
