Winter Workshop Series at First State Heritage Park

The holidays are on the horizon, and who doesn't love to receive a handmade gift? If you've been scratching your head about that crafty person in your life, want to make a family memory or just want to treat yourself to the basics of a new skill, First State Heritage Park is here for you. Just in time for the holiday season, we are pleased to offer one of our new hands-on makers workshops: crafting a heart-shaped pincushion!

Inspired by examples from the 1700s, join one of our talented interpreters on Saturday, December 12 for an afternoon session of creation. Learn the basics of traditional hand-sewing and leave with a lovely (and practical) stocking-stuffer.

The associated cost is $15 per participant, with all materials and instruction included. Capacity is limited and reservations are required, so book today by calling our office at 302-739-9194 or emailing us at TourFSHP@delaware.gov.

2020 DE State Parks Volunteer Photographers Exhibition

With 2020 coming to a close, we want to thank our amazing photographers who participated in our very first season of the Volunteer Photography Program. This group of skilled photographers was selected to support the efforts of Delaware State Parks by documenting programs, natural landscapes, events, exhibits and experiences within the parks.

To help show our gratitude this holiday season, we are showcasing some of the impressive images each of these photographers have captured during their visits to Delaware State Parks. Stop into Killens Pond State Park Nature Center
Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to check out the special exhibition!

This program is supported, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on www.DelawareScene.com

Landscape Paintings at the Delaware Folk Art Collection

Why paint a place you can visit?

In the Delaware Folk Art Collection at the Blue Ball Barn, you can find many paintings like Boat Watercolor, by Wayne. D. Walker, that depict local landscapes. With their paintings, artists capture the natural features that play an important part in the community. In Walker’s painting, he shows us one way he usually interacts with nearby bodies of water: boating. The visual documentation of this scene not only shows us how native Delawareans interact with these bodies of water but the subtleties of the landscapes, as well. These small details inform us about secondary information, such as the time of day. Without having to be present at the location, viewers are still able to connect with the landscape and have this local experience of a serene lakefront.

To see more landscape art, visit the Delaware Folk Art Collection at the Blue Ball Barn or a Delaware State Park and create your own artwork. Share it with us using the hashtag #DSPLandscapes. We’d love to see how you define your Delaware experience!
