Lots of Changes in the New Year!

I'm excited to announce that Jennifer gave birth to our son, Noah, on January 18 at 3:22am. Like his Daddy, he is a tall one, measuring over 22 inches and over 9 pounds. He had a bit of a rough start that lead to a 10 day stay in Greenville Memorial's NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care), but is now home and doing great! Jennifer is also feeling great and we are both LOVING parenthood.

I know that some of you tried to contact me during Noah's stay in the hospital. I appreciate your understanding. I am now Back to Work! Call me today to schedule an appointment or to begin work on a new or updated webpage! 864-335-8672

Windows Usability

In early December I was the guest speaker for Greenville's Business Strategy and Network Group speaking on Windows Usability. In a nutshell, there are at least 3 ways to do ALMOST EVERYTHING in Windows. Want to copy and paste? Highlight the text, go to Edit, and select Copy, then select Edit to paste. OR you can use Control C to copy and Control V to paste. OR you can right click on the highlighted text and select copy. Right click where you want the text to go and select paste. Knowing multiple ways to do things can dramatically increase your productivity.
Other tips for increasing productivity:
  • Learn to type correctly (fingers on the keyboard, eyes off the keys). Anyone can learn this with a little bit of time and lots of practice. If you can type 50% faster,  you have 50% more time for more productive activities! I recommend the software "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing." You can frequently find this in the $5 bin at office supply stores. It may be 'last year's edition,' but will work great for practice.
  • Learn shortcuts. I have worked with people who use keyboard shortcuts religiously. By keeping their hands on the keyboard rather than moving them to the mouse every few seconds, they save tremendous amounts of time. Experiment with what happens when you click the Home key while typing a document or E-mail. What about Shift + Home? Control + Home? By learning the effects that keystrokes like these have, you will find yourself using them daily. Find more shortcuts at www.CallBrady.com/windows.pdf
  • After last newsletter's shortcuts, I received the following that I LOVE: Do you have a scroll wheel on your mouse? Click a link in either Internet Explorer 7/8 or Firefox by "clicking" the wheel. It will open the page in a new tab!
  • Have problems with your browser? The most common culprits are viruses/spyware, Java, or Flash plugins. You can uninstall Java and Flash and reinstall by visiting Sun.com and Adobe.com. Also, make sure you have the latest browser versions by visiting www.WindowsUpdate.com for IE or www.Mozilla.com for Firefox.
