Health-promoting Holiday Meals

With the holidays just around the corner, many of us are planning festive and delicious menus. Why not add some extra nourishment this season by emphasizing health-promoting foods?

Squash and sweet potatoes are loaded with carotenoids, powerhouses in fighting cancer. Build on that by incorporating plenty of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts or kale, and be generous with onions, garlic and leeks. Try to limit your sugar intake and savor the natural sweetness and beautiful color of pomegranates and blueberries.

It’s also a good time to reflect on ways to extend nourishment beyond what is offered by food. BCCT’s senior researcher Laura Pole, RN, MSN, OCNS, shares thoughtful commentary about shifting away from her typical holiday focus on big gatherings while still nurturing connection, abundance, gratitude and joy. She and BCCT project manager Nancy Hepp also offer 13 tantalizing recipes! Read Laura's wonderful post, Nourishment for the Holidays in These Unusual Times.

Finally, head to our Eating Well page for more tips on choosing the healthiest ingredients and creating menus that nurture an inner environment that cancer doesn’t like. We have recommendations for courses, books and videos too!

Safe Celebrations for the Holidays

How can you celebrate safely with loved ones this holiday season? See the CDC’s Holiday Celebrations and Small Gatherings page for the latest guidelines to minimize coronavirus transmission. The safest approach is to celebrate virtually or at home with the people you live with.

If you do choose to host an in-person gathering, keep the number of guests small enough to allow sufficient social distancing (6 feet), gather outdoors if possible and if not, maintain maximum ventilation indoors by opening windows.

Learn about the factors that can contribute to the risk of getting and spreading COVID-19 at small in-person gatherings. Staying within the community reduces risks associated with travel.Visit the CDC site for comprehensive guidance. You should also check your state health department for guidance specific to your area.

Finally, visit our expanded COVID-19 website section to learn more about prevention, lifestyle measures and natural products that may reduce risk of infection and serious disease if you do come in contact with COVID-19, and considerations specifically for cancer patients. We wish you a safe and healthy holiday season.
