Kia ora Kāpiti
Some exciting news this week, with the opening of new loos at the Waikanae Railway station yesterday – and we're looking for your thoughts on what's important in a new Waikanae Library and Service Centre.
Wider than that, we're still wanting to hear what's most important to you – in your neighbourhood, in growth in Kāpiti, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in our district's future. Make sure you let us know to help inform the development of our draft Long-term Plan – find out more below. Ā tonā wā!

Why our Long-term Plan matters
We’ve been asking you 'What matters most?' as we start developing our draft Long-term Plan 2021–41, which we will be consulting on in April 2021.
Did you know that the Long-term Plan is the Council's most important planning tool? It's a big deal because it maps out all the activities and projects Council intends to do over the next 20 years. It has an impact on us all on the Kāpiti Coast, even our furry friends. Watch the video above to learn more.
And remember to have your say this week online by clicking the button below, at your local library or Council service centre, or come and see us at one of our pop-up events.

What next for Waikanae's town centre?
Waikanae’s town centre is transforming – Mahara Place is now a bright and vibrant place to be, with a strong arts and culture focus.
Our aim is to deliver a town centre that meets the needs of the Waikanae community, with improved pedestrian access and better connections – to the railway station, and through the new cultural thread pathway to Whakarongotai Marae.
We’re also asking for your ideas about a new library and service centre – what ideas do you have for these?

Worried that you can’t hold it from Waikanae to Wellington?
Good news commuters, together with Greater Wellington Regional Council we've opened a new 24-hour wharepaku (toilet block) at Waikanae Railway station.
Councillor Jocelyn Prvanov said Council had been trying to get to the bottom of the station's bathroom situation for some time so it’s great to see the Regional and District Councils teaming up to solve a problem for both public transport users and the local community.

Work on new Waimeha Domain pathway begins
|
|
We’re improving beach access at one of our most popular beaches just in time for summer.
|
|
Starting this week, work has begun at Waimeha Domain in Waikanae on a new pathway to connect the Tutere Street footpath with the beach access point.
The new concrete pathway will move through the Domain to a new recycled plastic landing by the viewing bench. This will improve accessibility and reduce sand blow out on the dune the reserve sits on, where it’s starting to erode.
Construction is expected to last two to three weeks, and the site will be fenced off during this time. Access to the kids’ playground shouldn't be affected.

Jobs for Nature investment for Kāpiti
We are delighted that $8.5 million from the Jobs for Nature fund will be coming to Kāpiti over the next four years. This investment will supercharge work to restore our native ecosystem in the Waikanae River catchment, and provide an important employment boost – 92 jobs over the four years.
We'd like to give a shout out to all the local volunteers and community groups who have been working to restore Kāpiti Coast's natural environment over many, many years. Without their dedication and mahi we would likely not be seeing such a large investment. Ka rawe to those who have led the way!

Remember your masks, Kāpiti!
|
|
You must wear a mask or face covering on all public transport into, out of, or through the Auckland region, and on all domestic flights around New Zealand.
Children under 12 and people with certain medical conditions aren’t required to wear masks in these situations.
We've got this, Kāpiti. Please keep washing your hands, stay at home if you're unwell, and keep track of your movements.
