Pace Launches B2C Deliveries

Accelerated Growth in B2C Final Mile

Did you receive an e-commerce order delivered to your front door this week?  Odds are, yes you did.  As bigcommerce.com states, over 75% of shoppers worldwide make an online order at least once per month. The majority of those orders translate into B2C final mile deliveries.

eMarketer indicates that U.S. e-commerce sales will likely reach $800 billion (about $2,500 per person in the U.S.) this year, up 32.4% year-over-year from 2019, dialing up the e-commerce retail share several years ahead of forecasts from the end of last year.  The forecasts for the currently underway holiday shopping season expect a 43% jump year-over-year from 2019’s season.

Digital Commerce 360 reports that 63% of U.S. consumers are currently avoiding stores due to COVID-19 health concerns.  It’s not hard to see how the pandemic has contributed significantly to the accelerated use of online shopping.  Analysts also speculate that going forward, this elevated growth curve will continue.

These trends are driving significant growth in the B2C final mile sector.  That’s “business-to-consumer”, which is a delivery from a business directly to the consumer’s door; as opposed to B2B or “business-to-business", which is a delivery from a business, such as a manufacturer, to another business, such as a retail store.

Pace's History in B2B

Most Pace services over the last decade have been B2B.  We run courier routes delivering and transferring auto parts to and from commercial parts stores.  We provide cross-docking services and make middle mile deliveries of palletized e-commerce packages and parcels to United States Postal Service docks.  We transport paper, cleaning, and packaging supplies to restaurants.  We move inventory on its final mile from distribution centers to retail stores.  All these services end at another place of business.

Pace Invests in B2C

Recent market indicators have supported Pace’s decision to invest in B2C final mile capabilities, as many leading brand shippers and e-commerce providers continuously invest in and turn to B2C.  As mentioned in our blog post The Rising Demand for Customized Final Mile Services in B2Cthe expectations for final mile service have changed dramatically in recent years. On the receiving end of the final mile is the consumer. Today’s consumers expect visibility on their orders, the ability to choose their delivery windows, and professional deliveries that represents the brand they chose to purchase.  Today’s B2C final mile requires significantly greater customized logistics than B2B.  With this demand, it makes sense that a customized logistics solutions provider (LSP), such as Pace, can translate our platform, processes, and experience to successfully meet the last mile demands for today’s B2C business.

In November, Pace launched our first B2C final mile deliveries out of our Bessemer, Alabama warehouse and docks.  We added sort and delivery capacity for a current customer, viewing this as an early learning and development opportunity to springboard our growth in B2C for 2021...

Reflections on 2020

As we close out this year, we are reminded that 2020 has been difficult across all nations and societies.  Here at Pace, we are taking a moment to observe that one of the lessons of this tumultuous year is the ever-repeating truth that we can’t always have the good without the bad.  We should look within and beyond to discover goodness and be grateful for it.

Romanian born Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel was sixteen years old when the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar, Germany (where Wiesel was one of over 21,000 prisoners) was liberated on April 11, 1945 by elements of the United States Third Army.  Out of his immediate family, his two oldest sisters and he survived the Holocaust.  His mother, father, and youngest sister did not.  Wiesel lived on, authored fifty-seven books, became a professor of humanities at Boston University, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.  The Nobel Committee called Wiesel a “messenger to mankind,” citing his “practical work in the cause of peace,” and his messages of “peace, atonement, and human dignity.”

Wiesel lived a full life, eventually marrying in 1969.  He and his wife had a son, whom they named after Wiesel’s father.  Wiesel died peacefully at his home in New York City in 2016, aged 87.

“For me, every hour is grace.  And I feel gratitude in my heart each time I can meet someone and look at his or her smile.”
– Elie Wiesel

As we reflect on this year 2020, we are grateful for all our Pace Family – our teammates and carriers, the customers we serve, our customers’ customers, and the contractors, vendors, and friends who make our business work.  We are grateful for the spirit of serving relentlessly – for helping each other and taking care of one another. We hope that we’ve perhaps learned more about ourselves, about the strength and goodness we all have within, and about accepting that good times and bad times are both authentic life experiences.  It is only when we are fully present and engaged in these experiences that we can recognize life's gifts and riches, thereby discovering true peace and happiness.

We wish you all a happy, healthy holiday season and a thorough reflection on your 2020 year.

Practice Good Scanning Habits

According to the FMSCA, scanning the driving environment and being aware of potential hazards can help prevent safety-critical events.

Scan the driving environment and be aware of potential hazards. Recognize the hazards, determine what action to take, and then execute your actions safely. Knowing what hazards to be aware of will keep you prepared to execute proper evasive actions.

Did You Know? Two-vehicle crashes between large trucks and passenger vehicles result from inadequate evasive action 6.6 percent of the time.

COVID-19 Safety Reminders
As we work together to mitigate risk, control, and cope with the impact of COVID-19, we assure you that Pace remains committed to the safety of our carriers, customers, partners, vendors, and employees.  At all Pace facilities, team members including Pace employees and independent contractors, who are going to be in close contact with one another (< 6’ for longer than a few minutes) should wear masks.  These guidelines serve as minimum requirements for every state in which we operate.

Please also keep the following in mind:
  • Social distance where possible (this is the core of every COVID-19 prevention program).  Use personal protective equipment, such as a mask or face covering (PPE) where social distancing can’t be achieved.
  • Use good hygiene and wash your hands frequently.  Clean shared tools between use (e.g. – scanners).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces often (pallet jack handles, door knobs, counter tops, etc.).
  • Report symptomatic instances to your site manager immediately.
Pace will continue to post and use the Visitor Screening Tool and our Temperature Screening Policy at EVERY Pace facility.

Thank you for helping us to make safety Pace’s #1 priority!

This Week's Question:
An early example of B2C was the Sears Catalog, which utilized the postal service not only for mailing the catalogue, but also to merchandise itself directly to consumers.  Beginning in the late 19th century, and coinciding with the passage of Rural Free Delivery (RFD), in what year was the Sears Catalog first published and mailed?

Last Edition's Question and Answer:
Pace continues to experience exciting growth in our Atlanta market!  The official symbol of the city of Atlanta is the Phoenix.  Why did Atlanta choose the Phoenix as a symbol?

Answer: The Phoenix represents rebirth for Atlanta, "rising from the ashes" after the destruction of the Civil War to become a prosperous center of commerce,  transportation, and culture.

Congratulations to Toni, Regina, Ron, and DeWayne - our October trivia winners!
