December 2020

Welcome!

To the Fourth Newsletter of this Academic Year.

It's the most beautiful time of the year... Well, almost! As we are very close to our Christmas and New Year's break. Like everything this year, it will be a bit different than what we are used to, but one thing stays the same: no classes! But, before the time is there, you have a few more days to go, and for now, you can go and enjoy this newsletter.

In this newsletter, you can see which events are left before the holidays. Furthermore, the Career Committee will introduce themselves, and there is also a message from our Secretary (that's me, hi!). Newsletter staples are, of course, our Member- and Photo of the Month, so you'll find those as well. Finally, the SocialCie has a poll about beer for an upcoming event, so don't forget to vote your favorite!

Lots of reading pleasure and hope to see you soon!

Secretary 2020-2021

Upcoming Events
Dear girls, guys, and everyone in between: are you ready for a very Purple Friday?

Do you agree that everyone should be able to be themselves? Or do you just really love rainbows and purple? Then make sure your purple and rainbow clothing come out of the closet and send your photos to us so when can share them on our Instagram for Purple Friday on December 11th!

Whether someone listens to Girl in Red, Sweater Weather, or if they really love the show Friends: everyone is born the way they are. If you know any more LGBT+ themed bangers, you can add them to this playlist!

Much love,

Dear EPUrians,

While discussing our datinglives in the SocialCie meeting, we had the idea to have a speeddating kind of Christmas drink as the last event of this calendar year! This is an official e-vite to come join us at the Roulette Christmas Drink. Roulette you ask? Yes. We will use break-out groups to communicate with each other, and those break-out groups will change every once in a while. In this way, you will be able to talk to everyone that is present, and you’ll talk to a lot of different people. One more thing, just to be sure that you won’t be disappointed when you get there, there is not a real Roulette table present. The Roulette is a metaphor for the people present in the break-out groups that will change. The difference with last years is that the American Studies Department is not invited, so feel free to gossip as much as you want.

When: December 17 at 20:00
Where: Blackboard Collaborate

Ho Ho Hope to see you then!

The SocialCie
Dearest members,

From the 16th of November until at least the Christmas break we will have Board Hours on Mondays from 11:00-13:00 and on Tuesdays from 15:00-17:00. During these Board Hours at least two board members will be present on the “Board Hours” Discord for a chat. It’s not necessary to register beforehand or anything, so feel free to join if you feel like you need a little social interaction or if you just want to hang out with us. We all feel isolated right now, but don’t be afraid to reach out. If you haven’t joined our Discord server yet, please do and log on anytime to see if anyone’s available for a chat or to play a game. You are also very welcome to reach out to us anytime you have a big question or need a little chat (or anything in between).

Right now we see each other less, so we need each other more.

Lots of love,

The board

Introducing:

The Career Committee

 By Committee Chair Iris Marissen

Hey y'all!

We are the 2020-2021 Career committee! We consist of Chloe Zoer as Secretary, Anne Zomer as Treasurer and me, Iris Marissen, as Chair. Right now, we are setting up career-related activities for all of our lovely members as everyone keeps asking us what kinds of jobs you can get after you've finally graduated from American Studies. We would like to find out what life is like after AS as well, so I believe we're the perfect group of people to do this!

Keep on the look out for an interview with Dr. Bieger, giving smart tips on how to further your career and insights into how she got to this point in her life! We are working on some other very interesting projects such as a podcast, and other things that are highly secret for now.

Stay tuned, and we hope to let you know more soon!

xoxo,

message from:

Lotte Telnekes

Secretary

Hi everyone!

I hope you are all feeling the December jingles, as I certainly do! Just about 1 week left before we finally have our well-deserved break, but first, we all have some deadlines to achieve probably... Luckily we can get through this together! Grab some hot chocolate and join our online events to have some fun. I have really enjoyed all events so far and I am so glad to still see our members, even when it’s online. In the past months, I have loved seeing all our new members (who are very enthusiastic) mingle with the rest of EPU, and I am not lying when I say that I feel like a mom looking over her children proudly every once in a while.

As for my job as secretary of the board, I am having a great time! Although Noortje, Thomas, Charlotte, and I see each other a bit less than we anticipated when we signed up to be on the board, we make up for it during our weekly meetings. Other than meetings, I write this newsletter every month, check my mail a few times a day, make sure I don’t forget to make posters for events and post them on Instagram, and just about anything else people ask me to do because I am indeed a sucker for EPU.

I wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope to see you all at our Roulette Christmas Drink and, of course, in the upcoming year! Hopefully, it will not be a challenge for 2021 to be better than 2020 :)

Lots of love,

Your Secretary, Lotte
Photo of the Month
This month's photo is of one of our weekly board hours! We are very happy to talk about basically anything during these sessions and want to give a special shout out to Sem, who joins us e-v-e-r-y-t-i-m-e #dedication.

If you want to join us next week, you can on Monday from 11-13 and Tuesday from 15-17. Then we will take a break, but we will be back!
Suggestions for the next photo of the month?
Submissions can be send to secretary@svepu.nl.
Member of the Month

Every month, the board will choose EPU's very own Member of the Month! To make this tough decision, we will look at someone's effort, or something memorable that was said or done.

Our Member of the Month December 2020 is...
Emma Weijers!

This because she came up with an idea to organize an event on Purple Friday while not even being part of a committee. She talked to the board about her ideas and then went on to organize most by herself. So, even though she is not a committee member, she shows off her EPU heart! Not only by organizing this particular event, but also by joining all of our other events! During one of these events, she showed off what she was worth by lying to every single one of us to take the victory in Weerwolven 2 with her partner Dominic. Love conquered all in this game, that's for sure *wink wink*.

I was on a video call when I suddenly got a two minute voice message from Lotte. I said to my friends: “Wow, I just got a two minute voice message from Lotte!”. I did not tell them why I got the message of course, instead I said she asked me to write something for Purple Friday. Which was not a total lie, because Noortje did ask me to do that in that same message. Most of the message was “chaos”, the way Veerle loves describing things, consisting of Lotte, Charlotte, and Noortje congratulating me on being Member of the Month. Lotte apologized for the chaos, but it only made me incredibly happy to hear that I was chosen to be Member of the Month. A true honor! <3

At the beginning of the year, Noortje tried to convince me countless times to join one of the committees. I was almost convinced, but still said no. I started to regret that decision after I noticed how incredibly fun EPU is and how lovely all the people are. My former high school teacher recently sent me a text saying: “if your fellow students are nice, you know you’ve chosen the right thing to study”. I think she is right.
Not being able to see our fellow students in real life did not stop EPU from organizing all kinds of fun events. From a Halloween contest to Among Us on Discord, we keep having a good time with one another! We also created our own little friend group with which we hang out on google meet a couple times a week. It basically just amazes me how happy everyone makes me, even though I barely see all y’all in real life. Thank you for that.

XOXO,
Emma

Our Sponors
Great news! When you order stuff online, like you normally do, you can now sponsor EPU! This works via Sponsorkliks, where EPU gets a share of the money you spend, but you don’t spend any more than the original price. How does this work?

1. Go to https://www.sponsorkliks.com/
2. Search for E Pluribus Unum
3. Search for your webshop (Thuisbezorgd, bol.com etc.)
4. Order anything you want :)
