Jeju Island (1), 14 by 14 inches, encaustic and glass on wood, 2015.
I feel like I could really use a warm getaway on this little island oasis. It is a pastoral paradise. Or at least it was. Jeju Island lies south of Korean and is a Natural World Heritage Site, complete with a volcano, lava tubes and pristine beaches. But 2016 marked the completion of a massive naval base on the island, jointly operated by the United States and the Republic of Korea.
Despite protests, the destruction of the marine environment continued. This area was once famous for the women divers that harvested pearls by hand for centuries. Unique geologic rock formations were destroyed along with tide pools and crystal clear springs which is a devastating environmental, cultural and spiritual loss.
