Dear all,

We are excited to be back with our regular newsletters to keep you up to date with the activities of the SPOT- studies. SPOT continues to work to improve the care for women with preeclampsia in Ghana.

COVID-19 IMPACT ON SPOT

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SPOT study activities involving face-to-face contact were temporarily suspended on March 24, 2020. Given the COVID-19 developments in Ghana, the ethics committees allowed us fully resume activities in October 2020, with necessary protocols put in place to ensure the safety of study staff and participants.

New SPOT team members!

We are pleased to introduce two new members of our team, a very warm welcome to
Emmanuella Salia and Katja Drechsel!
Emmanuella Lebasaana Salia graduated with a BSc Human Biology and MBChB from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. She practiced clinical medicine prior to obtaining a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University. As a post-doctoral research fellow in Dr Claire Simpson’s lab, she will be analyzing genomic and other -omics data with the latest genetic epidemiological and statistical tools. She will also provide support for the management of the biobank within the SPOT-BIO study and other related research infrastructure.
Katja Drechsel is a Dutch medical student from Utrecht University. Katja joined us to work on a maternal near miss review, during a 12-week internship. She works under the direct supervision of Klaartje Olde Loohuis and Kwame Adu-Bonsaffoh, the internship will last until the end of November this year. Afterwards, she will start her final (clinical) internship and she hopes to pursue a future in the field of gynaecology/obstetrics

SPOT-studies overview

  1. To externally validate the fullPIERS and miniPIERS prediction models, and develop a simple, user friendly, numeric Severe Pre-eclampsia adverse Outcome Triage (SPOT) score to assist clinical decision making in severe early pre-eclampsia (SPOT-VAL).
  2. To quantify the relationship between fetal (and maternal) APOL1 status and preeclampsia and assess whether this can predict pre-eclampsia (SPOT-BIO).
  3. To understand the views on ‘good care’ of various stakeholders in the care of Hypertension Disorders in Pregnancy (HDP): health professionals, health management and pregnant women themselves.
  4. To assess impact of SPOT-score combined with shared-decision making tool implementation (SPOT-impact).
  5. To assess the incidence of mental health disorders among women with pregnancies complicated by an early HDP.
