Note from the CEO

Juan Salgado, CEO, Phoenix IDA & PCDIC
On behalf of the Phoenix IDA Board of Directors and our administrative team, I would like to congratulate Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego on her recent election victory and State of the City address. We were honored to support the Mayor and sponsor this year's event hosted by my good friend, Todd Sanders, and the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce.

We look forward to continue collaborating with Mayor Gallego, City leaders, and staff on bolstering the local economy and making Phoenix “stronger, smarter, greener, and better," as the Mayor called for during her address.

For more details about the actions the Mayor outlined, visit the online Phoenix By the Numbers flipbook on the chamber's website.

We wish you a warm and safe holiday season.

Sincerely,

Juan Salgado

A national expert on eviction challenges Arizona to "hold our rhetoric up to the data.”

The Eviction Forum graphic
On November 9-10, 2020 Phoenix IDA sponsored the Eviction Forum, hosted by the Arizona Housing Coalition. Over the two days of discussion, the Coalition brought together several local, expert perspectives to elucidate this growing challenge and offer pragmatic solutions. Dr. Matthew Desmond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, and an Arizona-native, encouraged attendees to take an evidence-based approach to their work – to “hold our rhetoric up to the data.”

The data is sobering. As the pandemic rages on, one in three Arizonans is not current on their rent or mortgage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's national moratorium on eviction ends December 31, 2020, meaning months of back rent will be coming due for families if no action is taken. Nevertheless, protection under federal law did not prevent 900 households from being wrongfully evicted this summer, according to reporting from the Arizona Republic.

The Eviction Forum was an opportunity to identify solutions and take action. From the conversation, a few common themes emerged:
  • Tenant legal representation
  • Adequate and efficient rental assistance
  • A greater supply of affordable housing in Arizona
  • Rental assistance was something both landlords and tenants agreed is desperately needed – keeping renters in their homes and owners up with costs.
The Phoenix IDA participated in the Eviction Forum as part of its mission of improving access to capital to benefit low-income communities. Affordable housing remains a key issue across the state and for the Phoenix IDA. Discussions such as The Eviction Forum provide invaluable opportunities to hear from experts and the experiences of our neighbors so our community can rally around the most effective investments and interventions for our most vulnerable residents.

Phoenix Business Journal: Learning to 'Hustle'

The following is an excerpt from the Phoenix Business Journal about Hustle PHX - a 2020 Phoenix IDA grant recipient.

Oye Waddell, founder and CEO of nonprofit Hustle PHX, wants to see disadvantaged entrepreneurs from underserved urban communities reach success — like he did.

Waddell founded his organization to serve marginalized inner-city entrepreneurs on the fringes, naming his nonprofit “hustle” to reclaim the art of hustling.
