All Segments of the Legacy Trail Extension Now Under Construction

Paving the way for the Legacy Trail.
In keeping with Sarasota County’s development plans, construction on all three segments of the Legacy Trail extension is now underway. Segment 1 extends from Proctor Road to Bahia Vista Street, segment 2 extends from Culverhouse Nature Park to Proctor Road, and segment 3 goes from Bahia Vista Street to Ringling Boulevard. We could see segment 1 completed by the summer of 2021. Next year is looking to be a better year already!
Kimley-Horn and Associates, the extension project's design consultant, provided an update on their work during a Facebook Live interview with Sarasota County Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources (PRNR) Director Nicole Rissler on October 28. Watch the interview here. PRNR will be doing another Facebook Live interview on December 2 at 9:30 a.m. with PRNR manager Jon Robinson, who will be recapping this year's progress and presenting the plans for 2021. Nicole Rissler will also be providing an update on the project at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on December 8.

In Memoriam

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Bruce Dillon, one of the founders and past presidents of Friends of The Legacy Trail. Bruce was the driving force in proposing and promoting the extension of the trail into downtown Sarasota. His vision, experience, and counsel will be missed.

🌺
We wrote about Bruce in the September issue of our newsletter, which can be found here. An obituary can be found here. (Note that the celebration of life at 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Toale Brothers Ewing Chapel in Venice will be held on December 5, not November 28, as the obituary has stated incorrectly.) The video below is from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Community Crime Prevention Volunteer of the Year Award presented to Bruce in 2019.

Sarasota County Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Update

The first draft of the Sarasota County Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Update is now available for public review. Documents on the master plan update are available here and are available for review until December 4. Comments can be sent  to Patrick Lui at plui@scgov.net.

☆  ☆   We're Back!   ☆  ☆

Friends of The Legacy Trail's info table (below, left) at the intersection of the Legacy Trail and Bay Street, near Osprey Junction Trailhead, is back — masked up and socially distanced. Visit us on Saturdays, 9 a.m. until noon, weather permitting.

As a special treat — only available at the information table on Saturdays — we'll be selling our limited-edition Friends of The Legacy Trail baseball caps, modeled (below, right) by Randy, who says, "I got a new Friends of The Legacy Trail hat. Styling and supporting a good cause."

Stop by, find about more about the trail and the new extension, become an FLT member, buy a neat FLT t-shirt to go with your fancy hat, and get your very own square foot of the trail with a donation of $20 (a great holiday gift idea).

From the President

By Louis Kosiba
President
Friends of The Legacy Trail

The directors and volunteers of Friends of The Legacy Trail wish you and your family a happy, healthy holiday season. As a former Chicagoan, celebrating this time of year with palm trees, sunny skies, and warm temperatures is vastly different from my memories of past holidays up north. Being able to walk, run, and bicycle outside in December is a precious gift. The lower humidity is an extra stocking stuffer, so to speak. And, speaking of that, I'll make a plug for FLT's Square Foot campaign. For as little as $20, you can gift a square foot of the trail to a friend or loved one. We will provide you with a personalized certificate, suitable for framing — or for stuffing in a virtual sock — that provides the GPS coordinates of your recipient's specific square foot. The money raised helps fund amenities along the entire trail, including the extension. It is a permanent gift with lasting impact. More information here.

Losing a loved one near or during the holidays is always difficult and poignant. I'm sorry to say that a long-time Legacy Trail advocate, past FLT president, and community leader has passed away. Bruce Dillon worked for many years to build the current Legacy Trail and its extension. Our community is a better place to live and enjoy as a result of his vision and work. Bruce: Thank you for leaving us a lasting gift!

Cooler temperatures are finally upon us following some interesting weather. Thanks to tropical storm Eta, we had some cleaning up to do! Fortunately, the stand-up blower that Friends of The Legacy Trail recently donated to us came in handy for that. And thanks to our new trades worker, we were able to get the trail cleaned up quickly and efficiently. Please welcome Richard McCarthy!
Richard has a diverse background ranging from repairman and journeyman painter and drywall to coordinating the operation of a power plant and safety development. He’s done home construction, building maintenance, landscaping, and tree removal, among many other things. Richard was previously a contracted trades worker on our preserves, and he is now diving into the trails management team. We are so excited to have him! If you see him on the trail, please say hello!
Now that our peak storm and maintenance season is behind us, we are working on getting the beloved a-frame etiquette and rules signs back on the trail. Keep an eye out for them! And the Legacy Trail extension is moving right along! I want to remind everyone that we send out bi-weekly updates that you can sign up for. Head to our Legacy Trail Update page, and follow the link in the top right corner. We also host monthly Facebook Live events. Stay tuned each month on our Sarasota County Play page on Facebook to catch a live update on the Legacy Trail extension project. You can also watch past updates as well.
