"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
-Eleanor Roosevelt

Enjoy this excerpt from the new book The Resilient Leader:
Develop Your Leadership Style
When disaster strikes, you need to find a role that serves yourself, your team, your family, and your community. If you can see the possibilities in your situation, you can step up to move the community forward and assume one of four leadership roles that you can shoulder in the Category 5 landscape (catastrophic event).

The four styles of leader are:
Designated leader – an appointed role that is evident to everyone and carries some authority
Peer leader – playing your part on the team to work together toward common goals
Self-leader – building a culture where everyone takes care of themselves to the best of their ability with personal initiative
Active follower – recognizing the importance of being a really engaged supporter to the designated leader, giving input, and seeking clarity

When a Category 5 catastrophe strikes, you can choose any combination of these roles. Leaders look for what is needed in the community. It doesn’t matter who you were before; it’s about who you become in the aftermath.

Try this: Consider the role you are currently playing (or were playing before the global pandemic). What type of leader were you? What type of leader have you become during this Category 5 situation? Now think about what type of leader is most needed by your community—is that aligned with your current leadership?

Leadership in a Global Pandemic
A 2-Time Category 5 hurricane survivor and serial entrepreneur shares her experiences and life lessons learned to help us all weather the extreme situations in our lives.
