Zombies, winging it, and deadlines

Hey there!

I've had to severely edit this email because my brain is buzzing with too many ideas and things I want to talk to you about.

This week we've been running our social media strategist course, and enjoying creativity classes with some lovely fire service comms pros.

These kind of sessions always get my creative juices dribbling all over the place!

So - just three things and a cartoon this week:

What type of comms pro are you?

Are you a planner?  Or a winger?

A planner just loves organising stuff, gets ecstatic pleasure from ticking things off lists, and needs order.

  • Strength: Making things happen in a calm and well-thought-through way
  • Weakness: Can be a control freak, gets totally stressed out when things don't work out as expected

A winger is more spontaneous, creating and problem solving in a on the go, finds they do really good work mostly by the seat of their pants.

  • Strength: Does amazing work in record time, and thrives under pressure.
  • Weakness: Doesn't always reach their potential as they spend lots of effort on firefighting and speedily meeting deadlines.

Lesley is mainly a planner, and is the reason I have time to write this email.

I'm mainly a winger.

I love the idea of planning and being organised but it is not my strength at all.

For instance, I need someone (Lesley) to plonk me down every six months and sit me still with coffee and no distractions, so we can plan our Comms Creatives content for the months ahead.

When we do it - we both LOVE it!

It's creative and fun.

Crucually, it means we get the important things sorted and ready, so I can enjoy being spontaneous for the rest of my time.

We love it so much that we've decided to offer it to our lovely comms clients!

We've called it the Creative Content Planning Bootcamp.

In one afternoon, you get to hear about inspiring ideas, new techniques and trends in social media, planning tips, and you actually plan your brand's content for 2021 DURING the online session.

We'll be there to stop you procrastinating, and inspire you to plan the most fabulous content you can think of.

So it's good for planners AND wingers!

I hope you'll join us.

Comms Creatives content of the week!

This tweet from Shropshire Council gets content of the week.

In a sea of similar public health messages, audiences are getting better at filtering out anything they feel they've heard before.

But this is a witty attention-grabber!

Shoutout to the Shropshire Council comms team behind this, especially Gareth Jones, who I have been a fan of for many years.

It's reached and engaged a bigger audience than usual, and indicates to residents that their council has personality, and can reference popular culture in a relatable, relevant and fun way.

People will like and enjoy it.

How much council content can people say they actively, positively like and enjoy?

As we teach in the Social Media Managers Academy, getting your audience to like you helps enormously in building trust.

So it's a top tweet.

Plus, the artist is local, so by working with this illustrator the council comms team is:

  • Championing and highlighting someone that local people will know or will be interested to know about
  • Supporting the role of the council in stimulating local enterprise
  • Commissioning someone who knows the area and its culture, and is more likely to create content that resonates with their audience
How you might use this as creative inspiration for your social media one day?

  • Maybe you can experiment with using  illustration to make a point in a slightly different way that the usual graphics or posters?

With Christmas coming up, it could be a good time to draw or paint something that you can use as a social festive message.
  • Or maybe you can think about collaborating with or commissioning a creative person within your audience?

Bringing in a different person to help with a small project often injects a new and interesting perspective or creative message.
