Antigone

A rehearsed reading of a new version of Antigone by Colin Murphy
Directed by Aoife Spillane-Hinks
28 November, 2.00pm
Tickets €5.00

ANTIGONE Leah Minto
CRÍON Derbhle Crotty
ELDER Morgan Jones
ISMENE/MESSENGER Suzie Seweify
ÉAMONN/GUARD Killian Scott
TRAOLACH/PROF CHORAGOS Jonathan White

Colin Murphy’s new play is based on Antigone by Sophocles, setting it in present day Dún Laoghaire amidst a contagion outbreak and the underlying migration crisis in Europe.
Antigone is the story of a body too toxic to be buried, a people under siege, a city under curfew, a conflict between martial law and human rights, a collapse in political authority. The play aims to draw out contemporary resonances, provoking insight into the problems and conflicts of today: the trauma of not being able to properly mourn our dead; the extreme restriction of individual rights in the name of the greater good; the potential abuse of an emergency to consolidate state power and spread surveillance; the heightened fear of the other, of outsiders.

With support from dlr Libraries via Creative Ireland, also the Arts Council and Axis Ballymun.
This link will be live for 48 hours from 2.00pm Saturday 28 Nov - 2.00pm Monday 30 Nov.

Placenames in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown

Dr Séamus Cannon
Thursday 3 December, 7.00pm
Free event
Book here

Local placenames in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown are derived from multiple sources and to study them is a fascinating way to explore our diverse heritage. Approximately half of the placenames in the county are derived from the Irish language. Other influences include topography and landscape; religious and social history; the colonial legacy; legend and mythology; the Italianate influence and some personal names. Join Dr Séamus Cannon as he explores this intriguing topic.

This event is part of a series of events and videos celebrating 100 years since the name change from Kingstown to Dún Laoghaire in 1920.

Dublin One City One Book - Tatty

Thursday 10 December, 7pm
Free event
Book here

What can we learn about growing up in Ireland from the Dublin One City One Book for 2020, Tatty by Christine Dwyer Hickey? Join us for an online panel discussion of how Tatty reflects the history of Irish childhood in the 1960s and 1970s. To provide context, Dr Carole Holohan (TCD) will explore Irish youth in the long 1960s while Dr Ruth McManus (DCU) will discuss housing families in suburban Dublin. Dr Marnie Hay (DCU) will consider how the novel provides insight into Irish childhood in the late twentieth century. Hosted by Dr Beatrice Scutaru (MU), the session is an initiative of the Museum of Childhood Ireland and is produced by dlr Libraries. Full biogs of all speakers here.
This is the final in our dlr Libraries’ series of events celebrating One City One Book 2020.

From Darkness to Light

dlr Libraries are delighted to present Tim Thurston’s Recommended Listening: From Darkness to Light. Regulars to dlr LexIcon’s annual series will be aware of Tim’s particular love of the season of Advent and we know you will enjoy his recommendations for the four Sundays of Advent beginning 29 November and also for the Christmas season. For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Tim to date, he is a broadcaster, lecturer and writer and his programme on sacred music, Gloria, ran for 18 years on RTÉ Lyric FM. It is a privilege to share in his enthusiasm and deep knowledge of music. Tim's wife, Anne, is a theologian with a love of poetry and her suggestions for some appropriate seasonal poems and writings are listed with this compendium also.
Check out the music suggested by Tim on YouTube, Spotify or Freegal. The booklet is available online and in all dlr Libraries once we re-open. You can also search dlr LexIcon's extensive CD collection donated by Tim over the last few years.
