As I write this, the state of Pennsylvania has just certified the election for Joe and Kamala, and the President and Vice President-Elect are introducing members of their administration. So yes, after 16 days of nefarious shenanigans, you are allowed to deeply exhale.

It’s not that the work won’t continue, of course it will (hello, Georgia and 2022). But after four years of the most corrupt, treacherous, cruel kakistocracy of an administration in recent history, we owe ourselves a minute to feel relief and reprieve. As Alison Sansone wrote for us just after the election was called for Biden, joy is fuel. It’s that energy that will ensure we can continue to fight for all of the things that need fighting for.

We certainly need the fuel of joy as we continue to face a raging pandemic. Many of us, myself included, have chosen not to spend the holidays with our family and friends. This is a decision we shouldn’t have had to make. But as I look ahead to January 21, 2021, I’m confident that a year from now we’ll be gathered with those we love most. And I exhale deeply once again.

I tend to be an optimist. A realist to be sure, but optimistic, generally. As such, I’m really looking forward to our new administration. I’m buoyed by the team that Biden and Harris are assembling. For a host of reasons, I believe that Joe will be both a reconstructionist and a transformative president, made possible by his competence and experience but also by what I believe is his reverence for public service. There’s been a bit of Twitter chatter about “establishment,” but who better to restore and rebuild than those with institutional knowledge?

This isn’t to say that I’m in any way naive about the extremism of the GOP, the toxic and deleterious effect of its disinformation on our democracy, and its willingness to dissolve into authoritarianism. Only time will tell how effective a recalibration can be with a new administration. But today, I’m exhaling, if only for a few minutes, and feeling clear-eyed about it all, including what we need to continue to cover at DAME from now through 2021.

I’m wishing you peace, good health, and joy where you can find it this Thanksgiving.
