Dear Friend,

This afternoon, a virtual panel of New York appellate judges heard our case against Fordham University for banning a Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter on campus, after Fordham appealed the lower court’s August 2019 order to allow the student club.

Our co-counsel Alan Levine argued that the order should stand so students can continue to organize for Palestinian human rights.

We just finished a lively post-hearing debrief with Fordham SJP, and our co-counsel the Center for Constitutional Rights, and Alan Levine.

Nearly 100 people attended, including other members of Students for Justice in Palestine, faculty supporters, and journalists. Thanks to all of you who joined the hearing and debrief and posted in support!

You can find our video of the event below as well as our blog about the hearing. It could be months before the court makes its decision, but we’ll keep you in the loop!

Below, you can also read Al Jazeera English's coverage of Mike Pompeo's anti-BDS announcement, which features commentary from Dima Khalidi and cites our new site tracking legislation against Palestine advocacy.

As we head into a colonial holiday that celebrates Indigenous genocide, we encourage you to spend time supporting Indigenous organizing and resistance. See below for information about two great organizations that you can support, as well as an upcoming event.

Next week, we will be launching a weeklong Giving Tuesday campaign with the aim of donating at least $2,000 to Indigenous-led groups. Learn more below.

Our offices will be closed Wednesday through Friday.

We wish you and your loved ones a safe and de-colonizing week.

Fordham Students Urge Court to Reject School’s Appeal on Palestine Club
Today, attorneys representing Fordham University students argued before the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, urging the court to reject Fordham’s request that the court reinstate the school’s ban on a Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) club.

More than five years have passed since students initially sought to start a Students for Justice in Palestine club on campus in the fall of 2015.

“It's disgusting that Fordham is still fighting against SJP after four years of this lawsuit,” said Veer Shetty, a senior at Fordham and member of Fordham SJP. “While we organize and educate about an important human rights issue, the school continues to spend our tuition money on a team of lawyers to silence us. Palestinians deserve justice!”

“It should be an open-and-shut case that Fordham is in the wrong for trying to silence SJP,”  said Radhika Sainath, Senior Staff Attorney at Palestine Legal. “Students should be able to talk about Palestinian rights without being singled out for special treatment and censorship.

Giving Tuesday and Indigenous Liberation
Giving Tuesday is approaching!

From Tuesday, December 1 – Sunday December 7, we aim to raise $10,000 or more, and invest at least $2,000 of it in Indigenous-led organizations working towards Indigenous liberation.

As an organization dedicated to supporting the Palestinian freedom movement, we are committed to the self-determination of all Indigenous people.

This time of year especially, it is important for us all to challenge the ways in which we uphold colonial structures that oppress Black, Indigenous, and other people of color.

To that end, we encourage you to support our Indigenous people’s campaign here.

We also encourage you to make direct donations to Indigenous organizations such as the NDN Collective and The Red Nation

Finally, register for a rally and social media action, From Turtle Island to Palestine: Uniting to Decriminalize Indigenous Struggles, centering Indigenous and Palestinian voices!
Dima in Al Jazeera English
on Pompeo's BDS Attacks

Following Mike Pompeo’s announcement that Trump’s State Department intends to defund and label as "antisemitic" groups that support boycotts for Palestinian freedom, director Dima Khalidi spoke to Al Jazeera English on the larger context of attacks on Palestine advocacy:

Dima Khalidi, founder and director of Palestine Legal, a US-based legal advocacy group, said the measure aims to stifle advocacy for Palestinian rights.

“This is one more step in a much larger and broader assault on a human rights movement globally, but also in the US – and that started long before [US President Donald] Trump,” Khalidi told Al Jazeera in a phone interview.

Palestine Legal has documented more than 200 proposed bills that aimed to restrict Palestine advocacy in dozens of states across the US alone. Only 25 percent of those motions have been successful, but the group says 30 US states currently have laws on the books.
