Update Today from Vancouver Island Health Authority in Response to Provincial Health Officer Dr Bonnie Henrys Order for  Additional Precautions

Afternoon Operator,

Thank you for your ongoing efforts to support your community by providing a COVID controlled avenue for physical activity - it is a vital aspect of health and self-care for so many.

You may be aware that on November 20th, Provincial Health Officer Dr Bonnie Henry ordered additional precautions to be taken as we all work to decrease COVID19 transmission around the province. Guidance has again been updated today, November 24th.   Current requirements related to gyms and fitness centers are as follows:
  • High risk indoor group physical activities are suspended, such as:
    • Spin classes,
    • Hot yoga, and
    • High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

  • All other indoor group physical activities are temporarily suspended pending the development of new guidance, including:
    • Dance Studios
    • Martial Arts
    • Yoga
    • Pilates
    • Strength and conditioning
    • Cheerleading
    • Gymnastics

For clarity, the above lists are not exhaustive, and all indoor group physical activities, including classes, will be affected by the suspension.  Please note that gyms and fitness facilities that offer individual workouts and personal training sessions (one client at a time) can remain open as long as they have a COVID-19 Safety Plan that is strictly followed.

Masking Requirements:
Masks are now required for everyone in all public indoor settings and workplaces. People who cannot put on or remove a mask on their own are exempt.
  • Employers are expected to inform customers and employees of the mandatory mask policy.
  • A customer can be refused entry or service if they do not wear a mask.
  • A customer claiming a medical condition or disability that prevents them from wearing a mask should be accommodated.
For gyms and fitness centers, masks must be worn in all common areas and during lower intensity workouts.  Patrons undertaking more intense workouts may be unable to wear a mask during these periods.  The mask should be replaced as soon as the patron has recovered a normal rate of breathing.   Additional guidance is going to be released shortly that will further speak to masking requirements and physical distancing for more intense activities.
Evolving Guidance:
We recognize your frustration as guidance continues to evolve- please be aware that decisions are being made at the provincial level based on the best available science.    To remain current as guidance and requirements change, please visit BCCDC’s Province wise restrictions page at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/emergency-preparedness-response-recovery/covid-19-provincial-support/restrictions. COVID Safety Plans will have to be adapted for consistency with any changes to the guidance.

As always, your district Environmental Health Officer is available to answer any questions you may have.

Sincerely,
Health Protection and Environmental Services
Island Health
What does this mean for us?
  • It means we can continue to zoom
  • It means we can continue to workout outdoors
  • It means we can continue the Step n Strength Class but, we have to move outdoors - I will send a separate message to Step members.
  • It means we can continue to do individual exercise programs indoors such as personal training.
  • It means Group Personal Training members need to wear a mask when we are coming into the studio until we get to our mat and start the workout - Garage door will be open.
  • It means that, if you are the only one in the studio with me, it is an individual training session.
  • It means we can zoom into the Release Restore Class but only one person is allowed to be in the studio.
Keep in mind that this is temporary. It may be lifted on Dec. 7. In the meantime, think about what we CAN do and stay away from what we can not.... Mindset : ) Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for all you do and all your support <3
