Dear friends and partners,
I hope you are all staying healthy and safe heading into the Thanksgiving break. Even though this holiday might not look the same as years past, I also hope you are able to take some time next week to unplug, connect with loved ones safely, and reflect on what you’re most thankful for during this difficult time. As LA Unified continues to run the nation’s largest school-based food bank operation, I was grateful for the opportunity to distribute meals donated by my office to families in need at Webster Middle School this week. We are especially thankful this year for the incredible ways our parents, employees, and partners have stepped up to support all our kids through this crisis.
Even though LA County does not yet meet the criteria to reopen schools, we are working tirelessly to finalize hybrid instruction plans, prepare campuses, conduct districtwide COVID testing, reach agreements with all our labor partners, and hear from our families—to ensure that we are ready to safely offer an in-person learning option to our families as soon as Los Angeles meets the public health requirements for reopening.
The holiday season is an especially difficult time to continue social distancing and limit traveling, but I encourage you all to stay home as much as possible and make safe, smart decisions so we can stop the spread of this terrible virus and get our schools communities safely back on campus. We all want to spend time with loved ones and carry on our own unique family traditions. Even though we have successfully taught my 90-year-old grandmother how to use Zoom, it’s definitely not the same as us all traveling to Chicago and braving the cold for the feeling of warmth that fills her home when the whole family is there. This isn’t easy for any of us—but as your elected representative, I promise to model the same behavior being asked of everyone. We’re all in this together, apart.
With gratitude,

Staying Together While We're Apart

For as long as it takes to safely welcome our school communities back onto our campuses, I will continue to meet with parents, school staff, and stakeholders whenever and however possible. Recently, that included meeting virtually with students and parents, distributing meals to families in need, and visiting campuses to support school employees and check out facilities preparations for our eventual return to school.

We are holding regular virtual town halls to continue engaging with our school communities even while social distancing. You can RSVP for any upcoming events and watch all our past ones on Facebook or our website.
