DEVELOPMENT ROUNDUP - HOUSING FOR ALL!
Written by: Jonathon Feinberg, Organizing Director

This past month has been difficult on our city. Virus cases continue to rise, Lynn is still an epicenter for the pandemic. While many government officials blame small gatherings for this new spike, we know that unstable and overcrowded housing plays no small role. Moreover, over 50% of Lynners work in customer-facing jobs, putting their health at risk to pay their rent or mortgage.

A recent Boston Foundation report identified concerning trends in the month since the state's eviction moratorium has expired. Eviction filings have returned to pre-pandemic levels, and rent debt is the primary cause. Unsurprisingly, diverse working class cities like Lynn will carry a majority of the impacts. Tens of thousands of renters fear eviction in the next two months.

We at the New Lynn Coalition are disturbed by the news that the City of Lynn has approved the development of hundreds of exclusionary units in new towers across the city. What's worse, we are dismayed that these developments have been approved without any commitment to the people who make Lynn our home. What's more, the Daily Item's callous, irresponsible reporting and editorials about development in Lynn seem to be written by the developers themselves. CZoning changes have allowed developments to proceed without public input, and to be built "by-right" so we have no leverage to secure much-needed community benefits. Without responsible reporting, we are left in the dark about decisions that will impact our lives.

But the news is not all bad. The plans for Union Hospital's redevelopment include a significant investment in elder housing for people at all income levels. Even though the Item did not once mention it, we are in the middle of a year-long community engagement process specifically looking at ways to bring development without displacement. It is critical that we support this plan - it will give us more leverage to ensure that new developments bring good, safe housing and jobs to Lynners.

Please, call your city councilors and tell them you want them to support the Housing Production Plan.

New Lynn's Food Aid Organizing Program

Written by: Neil Whittredge, Food Aid Organizer

Twelve weeks, tens of thousands of meals, approximately 1,500 deliveries, and over 500 Lynn families served since the New Lynn Coalition began its grocery delivery program in August.  Picking up the program from Katie Cohen’s leadership with the North Shore Labor Council, the NLC grocery delivery program continues to supplement 70 – 100 families per week with fresh food. This program thrives on the dedication and hard work of a core group of community members who show up every Thursday morning at My Brother’s Table to sort and deliver groceries to families in need. A special thank you to the North Shore Labor Council retirees delivery brigade!

Because we are a small organization, and there are other food aid programs in the city, we limit our delivery program to people who are stuck in quarantine with Covid, who are elderly or at higher risk of health complications, or simply do not have access to a food pantry or other relief programs. While our program cannot address Lynn’s food deserts (neighborhoods without access to healthy, fresh foods), New Lynn’s grocery aid program is helping people get through this crisis, and building our network by engaging grocery recipients in the census, in voter registration, and in sharing their vision for development in Lynn.

Organizational partnerships are fundamental to the cultivation of the grocery delivery program.  My Brother’s Table, a community pillar for food access, provides space in their cafeteria for the NLC’s operation every Thursday.  Thanks to The Food Project fresh, locally grown produce is routinely served to families.  The Boston Area Gleaners also provided the New Lynn Coalition with food for over 250 families in October. Sometimes storage is needed to secure food before delivery day, and KIPP Academy supplied the NLC with a walk-in cooler and dry storage space as well. United Way donated canned goods for over 300 families for Thanksgiving.  Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS) is in the process of commencing the “Phoenix Project” with the Lynn Food Security Task Force, of which NLC is a member.  GLSS and the NLC are currently working together to centralize the delivery efforts in Lynn by partnering with other organizations like the New American Center to pool resources and volunteers for a more impactful operation.

The city of Lynn is in the middle of a spike of coronavirus cases. Consequently, the need for food is beginning to spike as well. Just this week an additional 25 homes requested food assistance. Most weeks we take in less than 10. Our goal is to secure enough food to supplement these families twice a month, until we are clear of this coronavirus pandemic.

A small, monthly donation can go a long way with this community effort. Your support will help the New Lynn Coalition keep our grocery delivery program going, and help give a little stability to the 500 households we serve who are severely impacted by this crisis.  Please consider joining the community effort with your monthly or one-time donation:
