Thanksgiving May Not Be the Same this Year

In this year, like none other in our history, we enter the Holiday season wondering how to maintain traditions and celebrate the joy of togetherness. And, it’s not just about COVID. The joy of the holiday season may bring feelings of loss, sadness and emptiness for those who have experienced the death of a loved one. Same goes for families that are not gathering together in person this year due to COVID. For many, like me who lost my beloved mother this year, we will be starting new chapters. I think one of the best things we can do is simply acknowledge that this year will be different. Give yourself permission to change whatever traditions you need to change. Just because something has been done a certain way for twenty years doesn’t mean that it’s the only way to do it. Change things if you want to. You can always return to the old traditions another year. Little traditions that were special to my Mom, like always having a relish tray at Thanksgiving with peanut butter celery and Gherkin sweet pickle, will go on!

Engage in an activity that you and your loved one especially enjoyed. Have some photo albums out, including pictures of holidays past. Share favorite stores and funny memories. You may want to begin a new tradition that is meaningful to you. You may change the location of Thanksgiving dinner or even go out to a restaurant. Another example is to light a special candle that day. It may symbolize that special person who has died or be a light for the path leading you into the future. All of these are also good ideas even if you are just missing your typical family holiday traditions due to COVID. Sharing the good times over a Zoom chat brings you all closer together and lets you see the smiling faces you love. Whatever happens this Holiday know that you are all still connected through the love you share, whether you are just in different locations, or in spirit on the other side. As the song says, “Love will keep us together.”

Sending love to my Mom this Holiday

Animal Aromatherapy Can Help Our Animal Companions
While aromatherapy is well-known for its therapeutic uses with humans, many may not know that aromatherapy may also be helpful for our animal friends too.

The sense of smell is important to all animals and is relied upon for health and general well-being and especially more so for animals and their survival. An animal’s sense of smell is much more potent than ours. With some they are capable of detecting scent 10,000 to 100,000 greater than humans!
Aromatherapy includes the use of pure essential oils (concentrated extracts derived from the flowers, leaves, rinds, roots, seeds, and also the gums/resins of aromatic plants and trees) as well as the use of hydrosols and botanical bases such as aloe vera gel and jojoba. Essential oils are made up of many different chemical components that give the essences their therapeutic properties and most importantly their unique scent -- all useful for the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of our animals.
There are many uses of essential oils and aroma-therapies, including preventative healthcare. And, many ways that aromatherapy can be used: massage, inhalation, diffusing, topical compresses, healing baths, and hydrotherapies.
