Digitalising Face-to-Face Learning
with Renault UK

Convert classroom training to interactive online courses
Changing strategy, building potential

Earlier this year we wrote a blog about how you might deliver some of your face-to-face training online.

We had a great response to the post and so, as we move into another lockdown, we thought it might be useful to find out how one of our clients tackled the problem.

With a technical training programme firmly in place, Renault UK were already successfully delivering classroom-based courses on electric vehicles throughout their training centres.

However, the arrival of the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, necessitated a different solution.

Creating a shift to Digital

With three days of face-to-face material spread across two courses Renault UK required a rapid digital solution to continue to offer this training to their dealer network.

Autonomy have a lot of experience of delivering similar online learning solutions within the automotive sector and worked closely with Renault's subject matter experts to distil and refine the training content.

As a basis for the online learning, we used existing PowerPoints that had already been prepared for face-to-face delivery. These helped us to define the structure into which we could design interactive activities and features to make the modules more engaging.

Part of the face-to-face training also involved workshop-based procedures looking at battery removal and vehicle lockouts to ensure employee safety.

To replicate this online, we filmed these sequences during a two day ‘socially distanced’ shoot.

With approximately 90 minutes of interactive learning content to build, and a fast-approaching deadline we chose to use Articulate's Rise solution to assemble the modules. Rise is a rapid, responsive web content development tool, allowing developers to create web page-based learning content.

The addition of interactions, audio and video along with simple quiz questions allows for the modules to have a consistent look and feel regardless of the developer working on each project.

For a more detailed case study on why you might consider using Storyline vs. Rise, please keep an eye out for an upcoming blog post where we will go into a lot more detail.

Training launch, feedback and results

Since launch, in September on Renault UK's LMS, feedback from users has been extremely positive.

For example, one of the modules has almost doubled its numbers in the first three months with users citing the course as ‘refreshing, clear and easy to do’.

And now, with more people using the online modules as a prerequisite, this ultimately means more workshop time (in smaller numbers but higher throughput) with attendees turning up better prepared and with a greater knowledge of the subject matter.

It's quite a challenge to look at how to repackage a traditional
face-to-face course into online delivery, at pace.

Working with the team at Autonomy, we have successfully created three online, interactive modules that launched onto our LMS and have been very well received.

This solved an immediate technical problem that had been presented to us by the National lockdowns, and enabled our training to continue.
