Dr Lazarus Momanyi is a medical doctor and public health specialist with over 10 years’ experience designing and implementing HIV programmes in Kenya. As Technical Advisor for HIV DSD at the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP), a division of Kenya Ministry of Health, he is currently involved in coordinating the design, implementation and scale up of client-centred DSD models. 

What does NASCOP do?  

NASCOP leads Kenya’s health sector response to HIV and AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and viral hepatitis through policy and guidelines formulation, procurement and supply chain management coordination, capacity building and monitoring and evaluation. 

What is the biggest current challenge for NASCOP in DSD and family planning?  

Despite making great progress in scaling up DSD in Kenya, we are yet to implement to scale “one-stop” shops where women are able to access comprehensive services, including family planning (FP), through various facility and community models.  

Proudest achievement to date?  

One of our successes has been the progressive scale up of the integration of FP services within HIV clinics over the years. We have achieved this through routine pregnancy intention screening of women of childbearing potential, capacity building of healthcare workers, and infrastructural support. 

As you scale up DSD models, what opportunities are there for FP within community DSD models?  

As we make efforts to implement community models at scale, we need to continually rethink innovative ways to integrate FP within the models. Some of the practical opportunities include alignment of FP for the women during six-monthly facility clinic visits and dispensing of oral FP in community ART groups (CAGs), as well as delivery of injectable FP in the community with healthcare worker-led CAGs.

• 1 December is the deadline for abstract submissions for the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2021). This annual conference brings together top researchers from around the world to share the latest HIV-related studies, developments and research methods. 
   
• 1 December is World AIDS Day, an international day of awareness and activism for HIV and AIDS. UNAIDS has put together this resource page, with free-to-use videos and campaign materials for raising awareness about important HIV-related public health and human rights issues.

• 7 December will see the IAS host a webinar on ‘’COVID-19 and HIV: Latest updates and guidance’’, focused on the latest news from the WHO and global lessons from Malaysia, Mozambique and across South East Asia. Register here. 

• The HIV/TB Implementation for Impact Working Group co-hosted a call with the World Health Organization and the Treatment Action Group that focused on TB preventative therapy within DSD models for HIV during COVID-19. Access the presentations here. 
   
• The September 2020 UNAIDS Report, "COVID-19 and HIV: 1 moment, 2 epidemics, 3 opportunities", looks at how lessons learnt in the response to HIV can be leveraged to guide the COVID-19 response. DSD is highlighted as a strategy for enabling “precision public health” to meet the needs of diverse individuals and communities.  
   
• New data on DSD for HIV and costing was shared in the September HIV Coverage, Quality and Impact Network (CQUIN) – AMBIT workshop, “Do DSD models for HIV treatment save money for health systems?" This virtual event featured presentations on DSD costing, country case studies and a panel discussion with data from Lesotho, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. View the English slides or watch the French recording. 
   
• Part one of FP2020-IAS webinar series, “Integrating rights-based family planning and HIV care: Lessons learned from differentiated service delivery”, took place in October. Click here to view the recording, slides and associated resources. 
   
• Also in October, CQUIN, with Resolve to Save Lives and the IAS, hosted the webinar, “Integrating for impact: DSD for people living with HIV and non-communicable diseases”. It featured reflections from Ghana and multiple international organizations, as well as an informative panel discussion with perspectives from Eswatini, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Uganda. 
   
• CQUIN also recently hosted a series of multi-country workshops focused on DSD to enhance integrated maternal and child health (MCH) services for women living with HIV and their children. Find out more here.
