Christiaan Mader here, The Current’s founder and editor. When we launched back in 2018, we did it with a newsletter that went out once a week. We called it The Weekly Wire. Now we publish newsletters four days a week, including The Weekly Playbook and The Wire, which goes out three days a week.
When the pandemic opened the floodgates of misinformation, we upped our game and went daily. For months, we ran Don’t Panic! — a daily guide to the pandemic that helped you sift through the noise and figure out what matters. It’s what our readers needed, and we worked hard to make it happen.
That surge was possible because in 2019 our members rallied and invested in us, giving us the runway to change course and deliver more news when more news was necessary. Every cent was put back into our mission-driven journalism. That’s how nonprofit journalism works.
