EAN News

Doneer Effectief: Update
EAN's project, Doneer Effectief, which provides guidance about effective giving from the Netherlands, has been a great success thus far! We are excited to announce that Doneer Effectief is now participating in #GivingTuesday the Netherlands.

In addition, we have also launched the Facebook and LinkedIn pages in the last few weeks - hit 'like' to stay updated about effective donation opportunities and insights.

Looking back: EAN Book Club
How to Create a Vegan World by Tobias Leenaert

EAN's very first book club was a great success! We hosted four insightful sessions to discuss the book: How to Create a Vegan World. There were a number of topics covered in relation to animal welfare and how to approach the road to Veganville (and bring others with you!). The key topics were about using a slow opinion and a pragmatic approach. Most excitingly, we had an exclusive Q&A with the author, Tobias Leenaert, where he could answer all of our burning questions.

Do you have an idea for the next EAN Book Club? You can send us an email with your thoughts.

Rot.Jong workshops: Workplace Activism
During November, we hosted two workshops in collaboration with Rot.Jong with a number of young professionals across a variety of industries about EA and workplace activism specifically. Within the sessions, the participants brainstormed ideas and plans about how they can most effectively increase the positive impact on their place of work.

Due to the positive feedback, we are working on building an EAN Professionals Network to share interesting research, articles and ideas on the topic. If you are interested and would like to improve your company's impact, you are welcome to join the LinkedIn group below.

Would you like to make a substantial impact next to your job or studies? Are you interested in approaching and writing reports for potential donors, subsidies and grant-makers?

EAN is looking for one or two volunteers for approximately two to four hours a week to join our new fundraising team! If you are interested in applying, please email us a short motivation and your LinkedIn profile to info@effectiefaltruisme.nl.

Other EA-related news

EU Parliament 'veggie burger ban'
Last month, and after much deliberation, the EU Parliament voted to reject the proposed 'veggie burger ban'. The ban was supposed to stop plant-based food makers selling their products labelled as 'burger', 'sausage' and other meat-related names. ProVeg launched a petition that received over 250.000 signatures to stop the proposal going ahead.

While we are extremely happy with the outcome, we acknowledge that the plant-based dairy alternatives were not so lucky. The pre-existing ban on the use of labels such as 'soy-milk' and even phrases such as 'milk-like' will remain in place. Vox's Future Perfect wrote a great article about the decision in general, and ProVeg Nederland wrote a great piece about the ban in relation to the Netherlands specifically. We recommend you check these out if you're interested in knowing more.

PISE Update
The Positive Impact Society Erasmus (PISE) is continuing to grow! In the past months, they have been busy facilitating a wide range of events for the community such as their future career event in collaboration with EA Oxford and their recurring book club.

Moving forward, PISE is working on their next book club session for January which will focus on rationality, as well as a 'reciprocity ring' and their Teleparty event based on Netflix's Social Dilemma. Finally, PISE is combining the end of their fellowship with a welcoming event for new committee members, where participants will play a giving game with EUR 500! The event will be in early December, so keep an eye out on their Facebook page for further information.

Further reading, listening and watching

It's almost the end of the financial year, if you have the capacity to donate and you're thinking about doing so this year, you can visit GiveWell's list of top charities. In addition, check out which effective charities have ANBI status here if you are giving from the Netherlands and would like some guidance.

Whether you're new to or familiar with EA concepts, we highly recommend Vox's Future Perfect podcast that tackles huge topics like saving lives, climate change and poverty to create a better future.

Have you ever wondered whether it is better to donate now or invest to give later? Founders Pledge released a research report this month about just this. The article reveals some of the benefits of investing to give such as exogenous learning and option value.

If you are involved with effective altruism or sympathetic to its ideas, you can fill in the Effective Altruism survey. The goal of the survey is to help the community better understand our actions, values, demographics and ideas. Have your say here.
