Devotion for Wednesday, November 25th

by Sam B.

 THANKS        GIVING

The month of November is typically seen as a period of time for giving thanks. For most people we recognize and celebrate Thanksgiving for the many blessings bestowed on us.  Leading up to Thanksgiving we also recognize All Saints Day (November 1), our Veterans (November 11), Family Caregivers (November 13), and National Adoption Day (November 21).

With our country and other nations still in the throes of a virus, economic uncertainty, political upheaval, social issues, and natural disasters, this month has been nothing much to celebrate about as we approach Thanksgiving Day. However, this doesn’t mean we still can’t give thanks for providing food on the table, having a stable home life, and providing for the needs of our children/older adults/grandchildren among other things.

While we recognize the word “thanks” for the many blessings provided to us, there are many people who are suffering not only nationally but here in our community. Even though our normal routine has been disrupted, we all need to reach out and demonstrate our willingness to GIVE back. During this challenging time, many people are suffering loneliness and depression due to the loss of employment, and social isolation coupled with the struggle to make ends meet on a day to day basis. They continue to need our support and compassion.

AS we celebrate Thanksgiving in our own way this coming week, give thanks for what you have been blessed with but be mindful of the giving component to those who are less fortunate than we are. As Ethel Percy Andrus reminds us, “It is only in the GIVING of oneself to others that we truly live.”
