From the Parish Committee

Gratitude from the Parish Committee

This fall, many items have come to the attention of the Parish Committee which have caused us to feel hopeful and grateful.  Here is our thanksgiving list…

New Members – We welcomed 3 new members who have recently signed the guest book:  Susan and Michael Plass and Mary McGarigle.  We are delighted to have them join us!  We are also grateful to the Membership Committee which has figured out a way to have folks sign our membership book in a time of Covid and has been reaching out to new folks who have joined our virtual services.

We remain financially afloat! – We are very grateful to the Finance Committee which created a plan B budget to enable us to measure how we are doing relative to the new reality of reduced rental income and changed expenses.  Rather than feeling that we were adrift from our budget, we have a way to see where we stand.  With careful planning, it looks like we will come out even despite the many challenges we are facing.

Our website is amazing!  The communications committee has risen to the challenge of updating our website so that prospective candidates in our ministerial search process can get a real feel for our congregation and our vibrant community.  If you haven’t visited the site lately, check it out!

Our search is moving ahead – The survey, cottage meetings and focus groups have given the search committee lots of valuable information about our church and our needs and desires for our chosen minister.  They have just completed a 50 + page congregational record plus documents too numerous to count– no easy feat!!  This is scheduled to go live to prospective candidates on December 1st.  Thank you to the hard working Search Committee!

The proposed eighth UU principle – The Social Action Committee is inviting us to begin a self-examination of ways in which we can help build a more equitable, inclusive community and can actively work to dismantle racism and other oppressions.  Thank you Social Action Committee for your leadership on this.

Our Committees are rising to the challenges we face – All of our committees are working to find creative ways to work toward our mission and provide opportunities for us to engage with one another and to participate in making this world a more equitable and loving place.  We now have liaisons from the Parish Committee to each church committee so we can work together more effectively.
Our staff is incredible – Each Sunday service is a work of art.  Our staff have been creative and hard- working throughout this difficult time.  They continue to collaborate to provide us with wonderful experiences and to keep our business and building in good order.

Thank you to all you contribute so generously to this church community!!

How can we better help one another in times of struggle?

Do you or someone at FPW need temporary assistance to get through a challenging time?  The Fellowship Committee has established an FPW Caring Circle that can offer help. We can set up a Meal Train site where you can list needs for meals, rides or other services during short term difficulties and distribute the information to the congregation via email. Join the First Parish Community!

Do you consider First Parish your spiritual home?

If so, consider becoming a member!

First Parish welcomes people of all religious backgrounds who affirm the worth of human beings, advocate freedom of belief, and the search for advancing truth.

What does it mean to be a member at First Parish?

Membership is how you indicate that you are part of the First Parish community.

Members can vote on important issues such as the annual and other congregational meetings, including the ministerial search. While the majority of committees are open to anyone who is interested, certain committees require membership.

Members are formally welcomed generally twice a year in a New Member Welcome at a Sunday service and Fellowship/Membership committees host social events throughout the year.

Okay, how do I become a member?

Simply speak with our minister, Wendy, or the membership committee to get started (Clint and Sue Sours co-chair, Kat Cass, Melinda Dennis, David Morrison, Martha Scott), email: membership@fpwatertown.org

FPW Social Action Event

In recognition that November 2020 is Native American Heritage Month, the FPW Social Action Committee is pleased to sponsor a community talk-back session on Tuesday December 1st at 7:00pm with Dr. Mishy Lesser, Learning Director of Upstander Project/Dawnland.

The film “Dawnland” is the untold story of Indigenous child removal in the US through the nation’s first-ever government-endorsed truth and reconciliation commission, which investigated the devastating impact of Maine’s child welfare practices on the Wabanaki people.

This beautiful and awakening film may be viewed for free via PBS at any time during the rest of November using this link. We ask that you take time to watch this film (1 hour) at your convenience this month and then plan to join our Zoom discussion on December 1st. Zoom details will be sent by email the week of the event.

We would also like to share the many wonderful learning resources that are available on the Native American Heritage Month website.
Social Action's November Giving Box will be in continued support of our long-time recipient, The Grow Clinic!

In light of COVID and hospital restrictions, the Grow Clinic is requesting essential item gifts in the form of $25 gift cards from specific stores in lieu of the usual children's gifts.

Izzy and Beth Tappan-deFrees will be collecting money and then purchase gift cards on 11/30. We can work with Venmo (@bethtd), cash, or checks (mail to 52 Columbus Ave, Waltham, MA 02451.) We will do a bulk purchase the weekend after Thanksgiving, and mail it to  Grow Clinic. If you prefer to send us gift cards directly, please call us.  Let us know your questions!
