The timeframe for the Digital Health Literacy online free training has been extended until 31 March 2021. This nationwide initiative provides training to library staff on how users can navigate and understand the new Federal Government digital health initiatives, such as My Health Record and assists libraries to better support their communities, and engage with other likeminded organisations. ALIA President Viv Barton has set her presidential theme as Education, and in this issue, we will look at the relationship between libraries and education. We want to hear about how your libraries educate communities, helping people pursue lifelong learning, and guide them in identifying and managing misinformation and disinformation. Watch the State Library Victoria's video on 'Guide Alice': Mt Buffalo's original rebel, guide and photographer; and the library is hosting its free afternoon tea and talk on 2 December featuring award-winning Wiradjuri author Tara June Winch. The State Library Queensland has opened applications for its 2021 black&write! Writing Fellowships; and its Summer Reading Club website is now live. Deakin University Library has launched its new borrowing app. A TEQSA survey revealed that students who had to study from home due to the pandemic missed using their school library.

Public library news
In NSW, Bathurst Library is hosting author talks on Zoom; Macquarie Regional Library is celebrating 50 years of service; MidCoast Council Libraries is running the Summer Reading Club; Shoalhaven City Council is seeking community feedback to design its Sanctuary Point Library; Tamworth Council has chosen a construction company for its new Quirindi Library; Wagga Wagga City Library is running its annual Christmas Food Appeal; and Woolgoolga Library is celebrating 20 years of operation. In WA, Fremantle Library's homeless support service has received huge support since its launch; and from 5 December 2020 WA public libraries will be required to maintain a contact register of patrons, staff, visitors and contractors for COVID-19 contact tracing, if required. In VIC, City of Melbourne Libraries is seeking feedback for its new framework until 23 December; storytimes will resume at Port Fairy Library.

Technology and online safety news
Misinformation continues to be an issue, this Conversation article has a few suggestions to combat fake news. Meanwhile, children as young as three believe that YouTube is better for learning than other types of video.

Arts and media news
The Australia Council has announced $2 million in funding has been allocated to the new Re:imagine: Sector Recovery Initiatives fund. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is running its annual Festive Appeal, and AIATSIS has released its Return of Cultural Heritage Report 2018-2020. Australian writers continue to struggle to make a living income according to a Sydney Morning Herald article. Untapped has been launched, and the recording is now online, featuring readings and appearances from Australian authors Anita Heiss, Garry Disher, Carmel Bird, Gillian Rubinstein, Sophie Masson and Danielle Clode, as well as international bestseller Cory Doctorow, readings from some of Streeton’s letters (which will be made available again as part of the project) and a reading of Dorothy Porter’s marvellous The Lazy Poem. In book awards news, the shortlists for the Reading Women’s 2020 Nonfiction Award; the Small Press Network Book of the Year Award; the winners of the Patrick White Literary Award; the Sisters in Crime Scarlet Stiletto Award 2020; the 2020 Bragg Prize for Science Writing; the 2020 Medal for Excellence in Translation; the Dymocks Book of the Year 2020 were all announced. In related news, libraries can now access Good Reading's Hub for Book Lovers which provides free access to all areas of the Good Readings content. Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing has announced a new illustrated imprint: Bright Light; and Oxford Languages has announced its words of 2020.

International news
In the UK, Cambridge University Library has announced that two notebooks written by Charles Darwin, worth many millions of pounds, have been missing for 20 years. Book theft is a perennial issue, here are some of the most famous examples. In other news, the Carnegie UK Trust has released the report Accelerating Digital: learning from a digital inclusion accelerator programme. In the US, an article published by Forbes argues that public libraries can help companies survive the pandemic, and one library lover writes about what she misses most from her local library during its pandemic induced closure. Public libraries have evolved to support their patrons during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japan, the Haruki Murakami Library at Tokyo's Waseda University will open in 2021; in Norway the final design for the Ibsen Library has been chosen, and in China the Jinniu District Library and Waihuacheng Middle School has been completed. JALIA Associated Editor recognised for achievements
Congratulations to Dr Bhuva Narayan who has been promoted to Associate Professor at the University of Technology Sydney. Bhuva also works as one of ALIA's Associate Editors for the Journal of the Australian Library and Information Association.

Marie-Louise Ayres, Director-General of the National Library of Australia, has been elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
