Happy December, Sparkin' STEM family! We can't believe we're almost at the end of the year. This month in honour of Computer Science Education Week, our theme will be coding and computer science! We'll explore what computer science is, how to start coding, and show you some cool articles and resources! As usual, the newsletter will contain fun facts, a challenge to redesign Google's logo, and more unique content!

ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH
Challenge of the Month: 

For this month's challenge, we want you to explore coding yourself! 

Everyone uses Google, but have you ever thought about how the logo is designed? Well, now you can design your own! Click here to design your own logo on Google using Scratch and block coding! This month's challenge is to create your own logo and show us what you can come up with! The most creative logos will receive a certificate and be recognized on our website :)

1. There are over 700 different programming languages.

2. The first programmer in the world was a woman. Her name was Ada Lovelace and she worked on an analytical engine back in the 1800’s.

3.  NASA spacecrafts run on 1970s computer coding!

4. The first computer bug was discovered in 1947, and was a literal bug; or moth stuck inside Grace Hopper’s Harvard Mark II computer.

5. Those who write malware to commit crimes are known as “black-hat” hackers, and those who write programs to protect against malware are called “white-hat" hackers.
