WESTERN REGION
A Culture of All Hands - All Lands

National Forest Fire Foundation and Gunnison County, Colorado Team Up to Create Stewardship Jobs

For Shared Stewardship to function at its best it should touch all phases of career development, and provide pathways for those passionate about hands-in-the-dirt, collaborative management.

Using a model that could be duplicated for fire-related landscape restoration and resilience efforts, "STOR Corps" is a jobs-creation program based in-part on the successful Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1920s. Designed in part to elevate on-the-ground conservation work as a legitimate career path, it has attracted environmental professionals with established careers in land stewardship as well as students of Environmental Studies and Recreation Management programs at Western Colorado University.

"For far too long, stewardship has been relegated to a seasonal job, a stop on the way to a more meaningful career. That stigma needs to change in order to have the retention, consistency, and experience necessary to effectively serve in the role of steward to Colorado’s most treasured landscapes."

Funding was secured through supporters like Great Outdoors Colorado and the
Tourism and Prosperity Partnership.

Prescribed Burn Associations Are One Answer to California's Megafires

This article from Sierra Magazine highlights how the increasing number of Prescribed Burn Associations across California can provide a bottom-up approach to the creation of resilient landscapes and fire-adapted communities.

"They can pave the way for a regular practice that weaves fire management back into the social fabric of communities, one that starts with neighbors, tribes, organizations, and officials working together. And maybe $50 for lunch and beer."
