Dear <<First Name>>,

Fortunately, we rarely need to explain to anyone how digitisation in the construction sector enables the transition towards a circular economy. There are now plenty of practical examples, studies and reports that prove this conclusively. Now, it is mainly a matter of implementation — making it happen! It is good that politicians are also recognising the importance of digitisation in the construction sector and are focused on investigating the possibilities for application. Read more about it in this newsletter.
EU building

EU context for digital building logbook (B-Log)
A digital logbook is essential in the construction sector, in the context of transparency, trust, informed decision-making and exchange of information between the owners and occupants of buildings, financial institutions and governments. This has been confirmed in the Renovation Wave and the Circular Economy Action Plan by the European Commission. In order to stimulate the use of digital construction logbooks, important recommendations are being drawn up for the European Commission.
In this context, a definition of the digital building logbook has already been formulated and a report drafted, providing an overview, comparable analysis and assessment of existing EU initiatives. Over 120 stakeholders were consulted through a combination of interviews, surveys and workshops. Madaster participated as a front runner in the expert panel during last week’s stakeholder meeting, organised by B P I E. We are pleased to have been able to contribute and look forward to a positive follow-up based on the recommendations for the European Commission.

Circular economy at scale

Circular@Scale
Hedy Lamarr, Anton Philips, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are entrepreneurs who have managed to scale up an invention or idea that has subsequently changed our world.  Entrepreneurs are able to change the rules of the game. Sometimes with major consequences for the entire economy. Although it may look like a great adventure, the reality for scale-ups is often different. Imagine the years of struggle and perseverance, sometimes also with a bit of luck in terms of timing or with some crucial help from outside. Circular@Scale, a joint initiative by Powered by Meaning and ScaleUpNation, supports innovative circular scape-ups in the construction sector. We are proud that Madaster, together with Spotr, Studio Solarix, Sustainer Homes, BOOM builds, Office App, GoodHout and PHYSEE, has been included in their special scale-up programme to make an impact and stimulate circularity throughout the entire construction sector.

Guido Braam, Director and owner of Powered by Meaning
‘We are on the threshold of a new era in which the circular economy will be the new normal. As an entrepreneur, I am delighted to see that companies are embracing the concept, which is resulting in a flood of inventions. What they need now is a little extra push, to get the ball rolling. Scale-ups create and inspire, and, even more importantly, circular scale-ups pave the way for irreversible improvements in the world.’

Financing circular building projects
If we are to leave our planet in an inhabitable state for future generations, we urgently need to treat it more sustainably than we do today. This awareness is also growing among those in the construction sector, which produces around 40% of all our waste. Developers, architects and builders are joining forces, which is leading to a growing number of exciting circular building projects. What about the financing of such projects? Is there such a thing as ‘circular financing’? Or is it the other way round? We asked Anke Verhagen, Business Developer Sustainability and Circular Economy – Real Estate Finance at Rabobank. She deals with sustainability in the built environment in the broadest sense of the word.

Omgevingsregister

The Environment Register: opportunity for coupling your data sources
Cirkelstad and Madaster are currently working on the first version of the Environment Register. A platform that facilitates the transition towards a circular economy by unlocking information about objects within our physical environment. This includes information about location, object type, life cycle, unit of measurement, and number. The goal is to create an overview of the life cycles of the resources and materials applied within the physical environment. This stimulates smart design and facilitates reuse.

Are you a building contractor or employed at a government organisation and does your organisation have data sources that partially or fully outline information about objects in a certain area of the Netherlands? If so, please contact Joran Straatman, Cirkelstad partner at KplusV, and talk to him about the easy way to achieve such coupling: T +31 (0)6 29489508 or j.straatman@kplusv.nl.

Mind over Matter
Is circularity in 2020 only about optimising the old, linear system? What will it take for all of us to make the transition towards a circular society? Or would we first rather have an answer to the question ‘What’s in it for me?’ Marijn Emanuel wrote an interesting blog post on the subject, on the occasion of finishing his work as Product Owner at Madaster Services. We are very pleased about Marijn remaining involved in Madaster via the Madaster Foundation.

Honesty about materials
Why should you want to create a material passport? Will all that material information not pollute your data? And be an enormous amount of work? After all, who uses that material information anyway? No one really believes in that, do they? Think again, because according to Gijs Derks (Innovation Manager Zuid Van Wijnen region) it is irrelevant whether you believe in it or not, it is simply part of the work that you have been commissioned by your client. And the argument that it would be too much work also holds no water — that is, not if it is your job to process the information for the Instrument Landing System (ILS), says Derks. He argues in favour of registering the information on materials, if we are to achieve an increase in the level of sustainability.

Madaster Partnertraining
Madaster Partner training
Once every two months, Madaster organises online training courses, especially for all its partners to guide them in the transition towards a circular construction economy through the use of material passports. In the most recent partner training session, ample attention was paid to the technical aspect. The latest functionalities of the Madaster Platform were highlighted and useful practical information was shared in order to achieve high quality material passports. The valuable feedback from our partners Modulo Milieustraten, Heijmans, Klokgroep, De Groene Jongens, BIM4ALL, W/E Adviseurs, Giebers, Trebbe, BPD, Huybregts Relou, Roosdom Tijhuis, Buro Kade, Bureau Eau, TBI and Adamas Groep helps the further development of the Madaster Platform, so that it increasingly meets the needs within the sector. Interested in joining in a Madaster Partner Training? Please email Sander Beeks.

Data
The power of data
Digitisation of the built environment is an important means to enable the transition towards a circular economy. Nevertheless, there are some obstacles on the road. A lack of clear guidelines and procedures, and a lack of awareness of the possibilities and unfavourable financial business cases. Reasons for Alba Concepts, Circle Economy, Madaster and C-creators to compile a list of ten important points of improvement and to present them at WasteBuild. A number of these sessions can be viewed on the WasteBuild website
